  • Eco-friendly bell tent on a smallholding in a rural Welsh village
  • Four sandy beaches and castles within 25 minutes’ drive of the site
  • Cooking facilities, eating space and barbecue, plus pubs nearby
How’s this for an itinerary? An afternoon of pedalling across lush Carmarthenshire cycleways or surveying crumbling castles, followed by tucking into a cheesy pizza or barbecued skewers over your private woodburning fire and barbecue? Blackberry Patch might bring this vision to life… See, this is an eco glamping site with a bell tent, cooking facilities and a fully equipped eating space. There are no other campers on the smallholding, so it’s just you folk and the rural Carmarthenshire atmosphere (oh, and a gas-powered shower, an eco composting toilet and a cooking tripod over the woodburning fire and barbecue). The smallholding is in the centre of the rural Welsh village of Ponthenry, so that means that there are handy things within a five-minute walk of the site. That includes two pubs and a kebab and pizza takeaway shop (yes, really…). There are lots of local cafés about too – not in the village, but within a five- to 10-minute drive of the site. Whether you tackle the cycle ways and footpaths that criss-cross these parts or track down one of the four sandy beaches within a 25-minute drive of Blackberry Patch, you'll be certain of a cosy abode to come back to. The six-metre bell tent has a kingsize bed and two single beds, and all the linen is provided.

Local attractions

Beach day? Toss a coin between the four closest sandy beaches. There are beaches on both sides of Burry Port (25 minutes' drive), Hafan Lliedi (20 minutes) in lively Llanelli or the huge stretch of sand at Pembrey beach (25 minutes). The latter is part of a coastal country park with trails, a dry ski slope and tobogganing activities – plenty to fill a few hours with. If you're one who feels drawn to heritage days, these parts certainly are not short on castle ruins. There’s the Norman Kidwelly Castle (15 minutes), Castell Carreg Cennen (40 minutes) 300 feet above the river Cennen, and Kidwelly Castle (15 minutes) above the river Gwendraeth. Stop off at the National Botanic Garden of Wales (20 minutes) to sniff the flowers, or at Llyn Llech Owain Country Park (20 minutes) to count the wild creatures around the bog and forest trails.

Bell tent

Liked: Huge cosy bell tent, very comfortable beds, fully equipped kitchen, very clean bathroom and lovely hot shower. Really enjoyed our stay in the beautiful surroundings, very peaceful, great local pizza takeaway too. Would really recommend. Loads of rooms for kids to run around on your own private field.
