  • Wild camping site with 20 acres including a river, waterfall and woods
  • A 25-minute drive from Llyn y fan Fawr and Aberglasney Gardens
  • On a 300-acre Welsh hill farm, with communal firepit on site
Simple stays are what await at this 300-acre Welsh hill farm, where 20 acres have been put aside for wild campers to take a break among grounds that include a small river, waterfall, woodland and grassy spaces. It’s all about simplicity at The View Coedmawr, with guest numbers kept low so that everyone has plenty of space for admiring the peaceful dark skies, looking out for the farm’s teeming wildlife and taking life back to the essentials. The site has no showers, but there is a small shed with a cassette toilet and cold-water sink, along with another small shed with cups, plates and barbecue equipment. Once you've made your way up the small country lane, park up, walk about and pick a pitch: maybe in the woods, in the open or by the river? At the centre of the site is a communal firepit with a couple of benches for chit-chatting and stargazing (and fallen wood, a small paper bag and lighter provided nearby to light it). If you’d like some private time instead, there are covered firepits with homemade Swedish logs upon which the owners have successfully cooked dishes as large as spatchcock chicken. Additional logs are available via an honesty box. The river on site has lovely little plunge pools to sit or paddle in, and there's a bucket on a string dangling in the river to keep your drinks cool. If you fancy a stroll, there’s a map in the shed of the farm showing you the way to the views of Llyn y fan Fawr and the Towy Valley from the 1000-foot-high top of the farm. The farm has cows, sheep, a horse, cats and dogs (the latter may follow you on a walk, but they’ll always find their way home).

Local attractions

In the mood for a big climb? Then Llyn y fan Fawr (25 minutes’ drive) should be top of your list. The lake is just under Fan Brycheiniog in the Black Mountain range, and worthy of your next lock screen or photo album. Or maybe you'd like to see the sea? Beaches are under an hour’s drive away. Fan of plants from faraway? The National Botanic Garden of Wales (35 minutes) has endangered plants from places like the Med and Australia. Aberglasney Gardens (25 minutes) is another fine spot for such things, with a fully restored Elizabethan garden, two walled gardens and a tropical indoor garden. Independent shops and cafés can be tracked down in gorgeous Llandeilo (20 minutes), Llandovery (20 minutes) and Carmarthen (45 minutes). And for something a little different, there are bird of prey feeding displays at The Red Kite Feeding Station (five minutes).
