A cosy (and cleverly hand-built) hut in the Carmarthenshire countryside is what’s on offer at Dryw Bach Glamping, on the edge of a small farm 10 minutes’ drive from Llandeilo. There’s just the one wooden hut here, so you’ll have plenty of space to switch off, breathe the fresh air and enjoy the sights of the surrounding private wildlife garden. The hut’s deck has seating and a table – just the spot for early birds to sit and watch the sunrise over the fields, or for night owls to look up into the night sky (this is a dark-sky area, so you should get some good starry displays if the clouds allow). Inside, the hut’s been kitted out with a cosy double bed, a sofa, a woodburning stove and a little kitchen with a gas hob, kettle (for those early-morning cuppas) and fridge (to keep the evening drinks cool). There’s an ensuite bathroom with shower and eco toilet, and you’ll have bedding and towels provided so you can afford to travel light. Pick up whatever supplies you need in Llandeilo – it’s got a couple of small supermarkets and some good little foodie shops (and also some great places to eat out if you prefer). There’s some splendid countryside around here so it stands to reason that you may like to get out for a walk or bike ride – perhaps along the banks of the River Towy, in the western stretches of the Brecon Beacons National Park or in the grounds of one of the local castles (of which there are several, this being Wales…)

Local attractions

Now, you can’t possibly have a break in Wales without visiting a castle, can you? Take your pick from Dinefwr, Dryslwyn and Carreg Cennen: all three are within a 20-minute drive, and all three have great views and some fine grounds to take a walk around. None of them is habitable these days though, so for something a bit smarter, sign up for a house tour at Gelli Aur (20 minutes, open on selected days only; book ahead) or just take a walk around its arboretum. If you’re into green-fingered pursuits, you’ll definitely want to stop by at gorgeous Aberglasney Gardens (15 minutes’ drive), set around a restored medieval building, and the National Botanic Garden of Wales (25 minutes), home to a much more contemporary huge glasshouse designed by Norman Foster. Other destinations you might like to put on your day-trip list include the Dolaucothi Gold Mines (20 minutes), the Dylan Thomas Boathouse in Laugharne (45 minutes) and the sweeping sandy beach at Pembrey Country Park (50 minutes).
