  • Firepit, kitchen and barbecue area; pubs a short drive away
Wildlife, the sea and coastal walks are all on the menu of treats at Valley View Huts in Pembrokeshire. Between St Brides Bay and the Preseli Hills, this site’s hand-built huts are living it up in an open green space with views over fields full of rabbits dallying around (a sweet outlook for any morning coffee, surely). From here, Fishguard and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path are 10 minutes’ drive away. There are distant sea views from the site itself, but up close you’ll be able to descend upon watersports such as kayaking and paddleboarding, along with coasteering or wildlife watching (and that’s in addition to the foxes, red kites, pheasants and other native birds that you may spot around the site sometimes). These huts aren’t just for wildlife spotting, of course – they're also for relaxing stays. Each one has a comfy interior including a double bed and full-sized wood bunks with bed linen, towels, cushions and throws, plus underfloor heating, wifi and a TV for the shows you can’t bear to miss. Your new den is kitted out with an ensuite bathroom (with a neat shower, basin and toilet) plus a kitchen with a gas cooker, larder fridge and a breakfast bar with seating for four. Those who prefer dining alfresco-style might like to set up beside the barbecue and firepit – a prime spot for viewing West Wales’ unpolluted starry night skies. The site provides free logs. And for essentials, there are shops in Letterston village, five minutes’ drive away – and pubs and a fish restaurant too.

Disliked: Hard to think of anything but if pushed I would say the gnats and suggest you take some repellent if sitting out, and some fly killer for the accomodation

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The hut itself was clean, and had full working facilities (oven, fridge, shower etc), plenty of towels and hot water. The beds were all very comfy and the hut itself was very warm, my husband was googling how we can get our own underfloor heating, on the in hut internet which was very good. The hut owner did ring me the day before we travelled to provide more information, and then the day we arrived to check that we go into the hut ok, which I thought was a very nice touch.

Disliked: The hut itself is very small, which is actually advertised, so wasn't unexpected. The hut wasn't very toddler friendly but again that's to be expected, there is only so much you can do.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The huts are in a great location as a base to explore nearby Fishguard, St David's and Tenby. It's a quiet location so lovely to chill at night around the firepit. Huts are a home from Home with everything you need and the beds are comfy. There's also a pub 10 mins drive away that does good food. Would definatly come back to stay here.

Disliked: Nothing.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Really impressed with this accommodation. Compact but very comfortable and well equipped for 4 people looking for a short break. Comfy beds, and very well furnished. Super clean. Very peaceful in a great location. Wifi worked a treat too so kids very happy. Would definitely book again.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike about this accommodation, but a dustpan/brush and perhaps a mat by the door would have been useful, particularly when bad weather.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Cosy hut with everything you need for a short break and spotlessly clean. Located in a peaceful spot with views across the valley. 20-30 minutes drive from St Davids area beaches and the same distance to the hills inland. Amazingly comfortable beds in such a small place. There is also a nice feline friend who comes to say hello morning and evening. Thank you for a nice break.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike but one thing i felt was missing is a broom or at least dust and pan. Weather was mixed and we had to eat inside a couple of times, and floor got a bit messy. But apart for that we had everything we needed.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: We (a family of four with two children of 9 and 7) had a lovely time in our hut. The hut was well appointed and the host was on stand-by to answer any questions we had. The hut made us feel like we had our own private hotel. Everything we needed was there. Good location for excursions. I have already recommended to my friends.

Local attractions

If you haven’t already been wowed by all the wildlife, you may very well be in a dazzle after an outing on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path (10 minutes’ drive). Seals and seabirds are often spotted along here according to season, and there are more animals and plants dotted around the nature reserve at Llangloffan Fen (10 minutes) or in the woodlands and beach at the National Trust’s Abereiddy to Abermawr stretch (35 minutes). Those of you looking to be a boss of the waves with some boating may want to head to Little Haven beach (half an hour) or Fishguard (10 minutes). The latter is also packed with interesting little shops, and there are more of those in St Davids (25 minutes), Britain’s smallest city, which is known for its cathedral, events and concerts throughout the year. If you're continuing your tour of the local beaches, Abercastle beach (20 minutes) and Newgale beach (25 minutes) will be a couple to add to your itinerary, especially for those of you looking to brush up on your wave-catching skills at the latter.
