  • Dog-friendly wild meadow site two miles from Fishguard Lower Town
  • A 30-minute drive from Newgale beach; 15 minutes to Strumble Head
  • Shops, pubs, restaurants and cafés in the town within walking distance
Fishing for a stay where boat trips, paddleboarding and crabbing are within walking distance? Two miles from Fishguard Lower Town, Strumble Camping is a dog-friendly stay close to the seaside – and more specifically, this music-loving Welsh coastal town – as the pier’s just half an hour’s walk away and Lower Town is 10 minutes’ drive away. Here, you’ll be calling a three-acre meadow your new den, and it’s properly positioned away from the crowds. That means country views as your barbecue or breakfast setting and access to a composting toilet and a hot shower (just the thing to wash off any sand from the kayaking and paddleboarding activities in the Lower Town). It’s not just about Fishguard's 18th-century fort, harbour and boat trips though, as this site is in the rather rugged Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and Strumble Head is 15 minutes’ drive away too. With Goodwick village a short drive, cycle or walk away (and Fishguard beyond that, of course), you won’t be without a nice selection of pubs, fish and chip shops, cafés and shops either. Handily, the closest pub is 25 minutes’ walk away, so you'll be well-set to have a pint or two and then return with plenty of time to see off the day with some time by a firepit.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Good views, flat pitch, quiet. Site is as stated basic - 1 shower, 1 compost toilet and 1 water tap.

Disliked: No toilet roll, only a small amount of sawdust for the toilet, a sink would be useful for hand washing, washing up, cleaning teeth etc..

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Hot shower, beautiful views, peaceful location. Toilet is a basic composting set up but loved the quirky nature of the facilities. They were clean on our arrival with a good supply of loo roll and sawdust.

Disliked: Nothing

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: View, area.

Disliked: Cold shower, dirty protest in what was little more than a bucket on a pallet. Facilities were awful. The owner said he’d come and sort it and bring some sawdust that evening…. He didn’t.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Remote setting. Had campsite all to ourselves in mid August. Loved the back to basics toilet / shower - once we’d worked out how to use the gas bottle shower!

Disliked: Not well signposted. Did a few laps of the lanes in the dark trying to find the right field.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Views across the Preseli Hills Being able to arrive anytime Shower was good once I learned the on/off button was on the shower head. Walks from the campsite. Very peaceful.

Disliked: Composting toilet was a hole into a grey plastic bin, no sawdust first night. Photographs on pitch up are misleading, showing circles cut into the meadow, which is why I chose that site. This is a three acre meadow field with a 10m strip of grass cut around the perimeter. There are no pitches marked, so nothing to stop someone arriving and pitching next to you. When I messaged the owner, he said we could drive into the wild uncut area if we wanted to. I said we were in shorts and flip flops and the grass would be too tickley. He called me pedantic and hung up on me !!

Liked: The fact we had the place to ourselves and fire pit and picnic table! Shower is cool! Absolutely gorgeous location and loved how rustic it was. Thanks for a great stay!

Disliked: The toilet was unfortunate in its design for a chaps genitalia! 😅

Local attractions

Strumble Head Lighthouse (15 minutes’ drive) is all about the scenery. Whether it’s passing seabirds or the dramatic coastline, the coastal path will take you all around the place, with wildfowl and dolphins often rearing their heads. Inland, Rock View (20 minutes) is another for the ramblers among you, complete with scrambling spots too. You’ll catch an art gallery or two in Porthgain (25 minutes). While the coastal hamlet is small, there’s room enough for a smuggler’s pub and an old slate quarry. Solva (half an hour) is another that's little but mighty, and it's a trove for rockpools and caves, or perhaps a go at canoeing followed by a sandwich from a deli. Surfing’s all the thing at the two-mile-long Newgale beach (half an hour) and watersports continue to take the front seat at Llys-y-fran Resevoir (35 minutes), a lake with watersports hire, mountain bike tracks and archery. Abereiddy's Blue Lagoon (25 minutes) is another place where canoeing's a-go too, but it's also a top spot for guided coasteering activities. Way to the west, it may be St David’s cathedral (half an hour) that reels you in, or perhaps Ramsey Island’s prime wildlife lookout (boat trips go here from St Justinian's, 35 minutes’ drive).
