  • Family-friendly site on the edge of the Hoge Kempen National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from the museums and markets of Maastricht
  • Large swimming lake with waterslides, plus playground and snack bar
A waterpark right on your doorstep? Watch the kids’ eyes light up as they spy the 2.7-hectare lake at Recreatieoord Kikmolen, with its two waterslides (the longer of which is a mighty 78 metres long) and its sandy, shallow side for the teenies. It’s a pleasing place for accompanying grownups too, with heaps of space to relax on the sunbathing lawn and a snack bar on hand to supply fries, drinks and ice cream. Throw in a lakeside playground and a programme of kids’ activities for good measure and you’ve got a space where the whole family can hang out happily all day. As tempting as it may be just to settle in for the duration, it’s a good idea to make time to get out and about into the surrounds – the site is just on the edge of the Hoge Kempen National Park, with easy access to lots of signposted walking and bike trails through the pine forests and heather. For a mini city break, it’s a 20-minute drive over the border to the museums, markets and castle in Maastricht. However you choose to spend your days, best conserve a wee bit of energy for the evening if poss – you’ll often find social events happening around the restaurant or games hall towards the end of the day.

Local attractions

The Hoge Kempen National Park is an excellent place for a rural ramble, with more than 50 colour coded routes taking in forests, fields and heathland, and some fine views to be had. If you’re more of a two-wheeled type, there are loads of cycle trails too, ranging from flat, family-friendly paths to more challenging muddy mountain bike trails. It’d also be possible to cycle down to Maastricht in 45 minutes or so (although you could also drive in 20 minutes). This is a very walkable city – start at the historic square, Vrijthof, then plot a course to take in the city hall, castle, churches, flea market and Bonnefanten Museum. For something a bit different, take a tour through the caves and tunnels that lurk beneath the streets. A fave family day out nearby is Kasteelpark Born, an animal park in the grounds of a former castle 20 minutes’ drive from the site. As you wander among the animals, keep an eye open for signs detailing feeding times to see the residents at their most excitable.
