An endlessly exotic hol bathing in one of two natural pools in a wildlife-rich Brazilian province known for its Amazon rainforest, wetlands and savanna plains? It could very well all be yours with a stay at Balneário Lago Azul in Mato Grosso… Unwinding with your partner or family besides the water under tropical trees with animals like wild ducks (as well as a gaggle of domesticated ones) roaming around is par for the course at this site; green recreation areas are also here for sunbathing while browsing the free wifi or getting a barbecue on the go. If you find yourself pushed for time – perhaps wanders around the wilderness beyond the grounds are beckoning? – a restaurant is on site to pick up snacks and a bar is about as well for a drink amid the leafy surrounds at the park. Not that things are all go during a visit here: a stay is all about soaking up the splendid scenery and cooling off in the pools... Balneário Lago Azul also has showers and a washing-up area as well as a parent and baby room for getting smaller guests changed. If you’ve got older kids on the trip with you, send them off to the play area or let them amble around the spacious grounds.

Local attractions

Around the state of Mato Grosso are waterfalls, caves and lagoons to ply – ask on site about specific spots to visit. Cáceres is the closest settlement to the park (just over an hour’s drive) on the Paraguay River with a popular fishing festival held here every September bringing in more than 100,000 people... To get away from the crowds, nature’s all around Cáceres – like the Serra das Araras and Taiamã ecological stations, as well as the Guirá State Park – but the town's best known for being the gateway to the Pantanal wetlands. The world's biggest floodplains are a must-visit when in Brazil, so make them your next stop after a stay at Balneário Lago Azul for jaguar spotting from a boat on the water after rests on freshwater beaches. Sticking around Cáceres for the day? Take a cultural tour of the centre and visit the Museu Histórico De Cáceres to learn a little about the local history. If you’re off further into the state of Mato Grosso next, the regional capital of Cuiabá is around a four-hour drive.
