  • In a green valley with grassy areas edging the Atlantic Forest
  • Within a 20-minute drive of Itu city and the Varvito rock formations
  • Swimming pool and restaurant; fishing available at the park’s lake
Venture to a valley in Brazil’s São Paulo state for a stay at Eco Camping Fazenda Paraguaçu, a site with a glittering lake and sprawling green areas set close to the Atlantic Forest. This south-eastern spot’s also scattered with granite boulders – great for those of the rock climbing persuasion – and has a pool for slow mornings submerging in the water as you wait for the atmospheric fog that often blankets the area to clear. If urban trips appeal, the site’s a 20-minute drive from Itu, which is famed for both its oversized displays of everyday objects (think a massive phone booth, traffic light and pencils…) and for being one of the oldest cities in the state of São Paulo. It’s got historical, architectural and cultural heritage by the bucketload – which is perhaps no surprise for a place considered to be where the Brazilian Republic launched. Sticking to serene rural scenes rather than city ones? Swing by Varvito Park to set sights on the strange geological formations (20 minutes’ drive), then return to the park and fish at the lake or lie back and take note of the many tropical birds that fly through the sky. Bring back some food from the supermarkets in Itu for a picnic while unwinding, or take it easy and dine at the site’s restaurant. This family-friendly park also has showers, a toilet block and a washing-up area. Dogs, campfires and barbecues are permitted on the grounds.

Local attractions

The city of Itu (20 minutes’ drive) has a host of historic churches to dip in and out of, like the Lady of Candelária, which dates back to 1780. Focusing on more modern times, The Energy Museum investigates how everyday life has changed for people thanks to the introduction of electricity, while the Republican Museum is set in a 19th-century house that hosted the first Republican Convention. For simpler ways to while away an afternoon, ask on site about local farms where visitors can feed the animals, go horseback riding or just have a gander at old-school agricultural demos. A visit to Varvito Geological Park and its striking sedimentary rocks also gets you back to nature – these whopping formations are more than 270 million years old. After activities that are more interactive? Drive to Maeda Park (30 minutes) to have a go on its mini train, cable car or waterslides. To top off the trip, drop by Itu’s Exaggeration Square on your way home and snap selfies with the oversized objects here – from humongous chess pieces to gigantic insects.
