  • On the Coldwater river in the scenic Nicola Valley
  • A 10-minute stroll to Merritt and 15 minutes' drive to Nicola Lake
  • Riverside path, gardens, recreation room and library
As it's Canada, you'll surely know that spectacular scenery and outdoor adventuring are a given. And so it is with scenic and well-equipped Claybanks RV Park, just outside the handsome city of Merritt in British Columbia. Merritt is set where the Nicola and Coldwater rivers meet, around terrain for mountain biking, hiking, watersports and fishing (most especially fishing: a town slogan promises 'a lake a day as long as you stay; ask the Claybanks team for their fishing leaflet'). Recreational trails and four provincial parks are in the city surrounds, and it's 15 minutes' drive from Merritt to Nicola Lake for watersports and a beach, as well as Monck Provincial Park for hiking. The RV park is on the Coldwater river, with access to a walking path along the riverbank, plenty of room around the grounds, and gardens to wander through on idle afternoons. There are facilities for basketball and bocce ball if you're feeling a little more active/ competitive, or you could amble along to the snuggly recreation room for board games, TV or to dip into a book from the park library. It's a stroll of 10 minutes or so from the park to downtown Merritt and its range of shops and restaurants; barbecues are allowed at Claybanks if you'd rather sit back and sizzle up.

Local attractions

Make for Merritt first for days indoors and out, among shops and historic buildings, the Nicola Valley Museum, teeing off at Merritt Golf & Country Club, or checking out the saloon – and bullet holes in the bar – at the Quilchena Hotel. Drop into the acclaimed Baillie House too, for free tea, coffee and juice at the Merritt visitor information booth, to arrange tours of town, and to have tea on the lawn in spring and summer. The Nicola Valley Aquatic Centre is your spot for a public pool and a gym, and the cosy reading room in the town library where to bask in front of the fireplace afterwards. A 15-minute drive from Merritt is the Monck Provincial Park and Nicola Lake, for a public beach, paddleboarding, windsurfing and sailing. You can also pick up a map of the mountain bike trails around the city: ask at the Baillie House or at the RV park for details.
