  • Small but well-equipped site in the densely wooded hills of Istria
  • A 25-minute drive from Pazin and 45 minutes from Piran, Slovenia
  • Outdoor pool; access to indoor pool, restaurant within one kilometre
In the densely wooded foothills below the town of Motovun on the Istrian peninsula lies Camping Motovun, a small family-friendly site within easy walk of wineries, restaurants and truffle hunting. Istria is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea, so it’s got a top-notch mix of on-land activities and pretty Croatian beaches. The nearest sandy and shingled stretches are 25 minutes’ drive away outside Novigrad, so make haste for days splashing about in the Med. Sticking closer to home base comes highly recommended too: the pretty hilltop town of Motovun has lots to offer, from the above-mentioned truffle excursions and wineries (both within a kilometre of the site) to a historic tower and city walls dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. If something more leisurely is in mind, opt instead for lazier days on site, where an outdoor pool is in place for dips, and free wifi site-wide should keep music playing and TV streaming. The site’s owned by the same company that owns Hotel Kastel in the centre of Motovun, so head here for free use of the indoor pool, discounts on wellness programmes, and special offers in the restaurant.

Liked: Pěkné místo s výhledem do krajiny.

Nikdo to tam neřídí.

Liked: Very nice view from camping, because it is in the middle of Motovun hill. Motovun town on the top is very beautiful, must visit. Half an hour drive to the sea. Nice swimming pool, kitchen and shower facilities are ok!

Disliked: I had cold water in the shower, husband had good warm water before me.

Liked: Great town on top of hill to visit, with nice walks in the valley. The route up the hill to town is steep but there is a bus that takes you up for 2 euros each way per person worth the money on a hot day

Disliked: Kennels near by with dogs that bark all night

Liked: Location; sunsets; bar nearby. Swimming pool was perfectly clean. Guests can also use hotel facilities in Motovun, including indoor swimming pool.

Disliked: Washing facilities are limited - one toilet and 1 shower cubicle for each gender. Communal kitchen only had a 4 ring cooker and 1 fridge.

Local attractions

Tipplers whose tastebuds are tickled after trips to the two vineyards within 700 metres of the site can continue touring and tasting at Vina Fachin (five minutes’ drive), Kozlović Winery (30 minutes) and, over the border in Slovenia, Vinakoper (50 minutes). In between stops for vino, entertain kids on the go-karting track, adventure course and paintball field at Motodrom Porec (30 minutes), head for Aquapark Istralandia (20 minutes) or Aquacolors (35 minutes) for days spent splashing about, or spend time with that perennial favourite – dinosaurs – on the rides at Dinopark Funtana (35 minutes). Higher-octane days can be had in nearby Pazin, where two zip lines soar at high speed over the Pazin caves. Stick around the city of Pazin for below-ground adventures in the caves, as well as ethnographic and art museums, a cultural centre, a Franciscan monastery and (book fans take note) Pazin Castle, the setting for parts of Jules Verne’s Mathias Sandorf. Over the border in Slovenia, further city days can be had in the coastal Piran, exploring 7th-century town walls and 19th-century palace museums, as well as an aquarium, beaches and the somewhat incongruous Rolling Stones museum. A little closer to hand, pitstops at Sečovlje Saltworks come highly recommended as Slovenia’s largest salt evaporation pond.
