  • Peaceful oasis surrounded by Mediterranean greenery next to the sea
  • In Punat, minutes on foot to the beach and a 15-minute drive to Krk
  • Massages, shared kitchen, coffee shops, play area and entertainment
Slide over to the southern part of Krk island for a stay at Camping Pila in Punat, a space separated from the northern Adriatic Sea by a slither of salt cedar trees and a pretty promenade. With the area’s pebbly public beach so easy to access, days are best spent snoozing by the water while here, perhaps under a rented parasol and on a lounger. Chilling’s also plain sailing when back on site as well, thanks to pine trees growing in the grounds for shade. Give your legs a bit of a workout now and again with a walk in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County surrounds. The promenade by the site traces the sea for five kilometres and has epic views over the water. If you’re up for exerting yourself a tad more, 200 kilometres’ worth of cycling trails are hereabouts too (with bikes for hire in town). For experiences of the heart-rending sort, race a couple of hundred metres along the beach for watersports like surfing, parasailing, waterskiing, banana boating and scuba diving (or travel to providers organising these types of activities on the shuttle bus in high season). Within around 500 metres is a yacht and sailboat rental centre for touring the tiny islets and hidden coves around the Kvarner Gulf. And if exercise of any manner doesn’t have one iota of appeal for you? Stay on site and make the most of the massage service or cook up a meal in the mini shared kitchen and have a picnic on the beach. There’s also a couple of coffee shops at the park, one at reception and one by the beach, and restaurants are less than a five-minute walk.

Local attractions

Entertainment’s regularly on offer in the centre of Punat, a few minutes’ walk away, whether cultural events or local festivals. Look out for live music, folklore evenings and waterfront parties; over on Košljun (20 minutes’ drive to a taxi boat launch) classical concerts are sometimes organised. If you make it to this islet, meander over to the Franciscan monastery then return to Krk and admire more architecture from bygone times. Visit the fifth-century cathedral in the island’s capital to mosey past a marble altar and stone columns etched with Christian symbols, then bound up Frankopan Castle’s bell tower for sea views (both 20 minutes). If you’re in Croatia with your sights set firmly on submerging yourself at the coast, seek out beaches like Oprna in Stara Baška, one of the most famed in the area for its white sand. Travel here by taxi boat from Krk’s main town (20 minutes) – this cliff-circled cove is accessible via narrow, uneven trails so it’s best to arrive by sea.
