  • Family site between two lakes on the edge of Bryrup village
  • A half-hour drive from Givskud Zoo; 35 minutes from Legoland
  • Miniature golf, canoe and bike hire, and outdoor pool with slides
Stay active or take it slowly – both are excellent options at Bryrup Camping, a family-friendly site just on the edge of the small town of Bryrup. This part of the world is known as the Silkeborg Lake District and it’ll be easy to see why when you settle down here: the site is just between two bodies of water, with lots of greenery all around to add to the chilled rural vibe. Those who are after quiet times can easily take wanders through the surrounding forests and around nearby lakes, or find fishing places (in lakes, creeks and a dedicated catch-and-release lake a couple of minutes’ walk away). If that’s all a bit much, simply grab a table at the site’s café to sip coffee and nibble pastries at your leisure. In the market for a bit more activity? There’s plenty of that about too: the area has several golf courses, and you can hire bikes, canoes and kayaks on site to explore some of the local scenery. An outdoor pool on site has waterslides for the kids and sun loungers for the grownups, or you can take a dip in the lake if you prefer freshwater swims. Miniature golf, a playground and a playing field are also on site to keep the activity going, and there’s a games room (with pool, air hockey and arcade games) in case the weather takes a turn. A small store on site provides the snacks and breakfast rolls to fuel games, and there are a couple of eating options and shops a few minutes’ walk away.

Local attractions

Taking wanders (or bike rides, or canoe paddles) through the splendid scenery must be on the cards at some point, of course, but that’s far from the only option for outings. You might also like to take a ride on Hjejlen, the world’s oldest operating paddle steamer, from Silkeborg (20 minutes’ drive). While you’re up in Silkeborg, stop in at one of its art galleries or museums or take the kids to eyeball the underwater beasts at Aqua Aquarium (Europe’s largest freshwater aquarium, no less). For more animal encounters, check out Givskud Zoo (half an hour), Randers Regnskov (an hour) or Djurs Sommerland (an hour). For a different view on the area, take a trip to the past on the veteran train from Bryrup or climb up for top views from Himmelbjerget (20 minutes). If the kids are playing up, lose them for a while in the mazes at Labyrinthia (15 minutes) or encourage good behaviour with the promise of a trip to Legoland (35 minutes).
