Breathe in the scent of sea breeze… Blushøj Camping is a coastal site in the Syddjurs village of Elsegårde, four kilometres from Ebeltoft, a well-preserved historic town crammed with cobbled streets and characterful half-timbered houses. Settle in here and you’ll be on the beach in mere minutes – the site's got direct access to the sands for swims or splashing about in the rowing boats or kayaks that can be hired from the shop. Poke around in the shallows and you may find a crab or few; there's also a jetty for fishing if you'd like to try catching your dinner. Sound idyllic? The owners agree – they took over here in 1993 and haven’t moved since, handing the place down the family line to current manager Asbjørn a few years back. If you fancy a break from the beach frolics, there’s plenty more on site to keep you entertained: a swimming pool with waterslide, a kids' pool, a small sand football pitch and a large playground with giant inflatable, miniature golf, pedal car track and table tennis. The site’s also got wifi access and a mini market where you can pick up essentials and place orders for fresh bread deliveries. You'll need to travel into Ebeltoft for restaurants, a supermarket and other shops.

Local attractions

Take a trip across this little peninsula to Ebeltoft (10 minutes by car; 20 by bike or bus) to wander through its pretty Old Town. Get a taste of the past at the Old Town Hall museum (complete with dungeon for naughty nippers) and on board the Jutland frigate, the world’s longest wooden warship at a sizeable 71 metres. If you’re more into the here and now, there are some splendid contemporary exhibits at the Ebeltoft Glass Museum. You may not imagine coastal Denmark to be a good place for a safari, but this area’s surprisingly well served with zoo visits: take your pick from Ree Park Safari (20 minutes’ drive), or Scandinavian Zoo or Munkholm Zoo, both half an hour away. Underwater critters small and large can be seen at Kattegat Center aquarium (40 minutes) – and one of them could be you if you book a dive to get in the tub... There’s a heap of outdoorsy activities to be had at Mols Bjerge National Park half an hour away, including hikes, horse riding and watersports; to get that heart beating a bit faster, ride the rollercoasters and waterslides at Djurs Sommerland theme park and waterpark, 40 minutes away.
