  • Site with a swimming lake in the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park
  • A 15-minute drive to Kirrwiller Royal Palace and 40 to Strasbourg
  • Bar, games room, play areas, bread delivery and meals available
Sort yourself a sweet spot in the Bas-Rhin department’s Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park with a stay at Camping Au Pays De Hanau, a three-hectare site with a large swimming lake for lazy days drenching yourself in clear water. Dive in and float to your heart’s content or grab your latest novel and settle in on the sunbeds by the banks for an hour or two. If your stomach starts to rumble, a fast-food fix from the park is just the ticket; alternatively, fire up the barbecue and make your own meal with ingredients sourced from the supermarket in Saverne, 20 minutes’ drive away. Bread and pastries are available to order in the mornings – just sign up for some the day before. As the sky begins to darken, head to the bar for a sundowner on the terrace and to chat about your holiday plans with the rest of your group. Walks in the woodland, wetland and farmland of the surrounding Grand Est should be first on the itinerary when it comes to things to do, but the swish city of Strasbourg, 40 minutes’ drive away, is also a top destination in the area. If the kids behave during trips off site, reward them when you return with unlimited sessions at the two play areas or, better yet, gather together as a family in the games room and make some memories.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The showers were very clean. The pitches were shaded

Disliked: The pitches were so shaded, they were covered in tree sap! It just meant your feet got covered in it. The pool is freshwater, so has algae etc. my boy got bitten a little, but no huge deal.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Excellent customer service. We arrived later than planned but staff were still helpful and welcoming. There was also a mix up with the local bakery who provide fresh pastries each day but staff were again helpful in sorting this out for us and ensuring we got some delicious pasties in the morning. Lovely location for walking the dog.

Local attractions

Thrilled by theatre? Then head over to the Royal Palace in Kirrwiller (15 minutes’ drive) to catch a cabaret in this much-loved music hall with room for a thousand people in the middle of a teeny village. For more traditional things to do, Saverne (also 15 minutes) is a stunning spot on the Rhine-Marne canal at the foot of a Vosges Mountains pass; make sure to check out Rohan Castle, an eighteenth-century neoclassical palace on the water’s edge. For more châteaux (this is France after all), the crumbling ruins of Wasenbourg (55 minutes), a historical monument set 400 metres high up, make for an atmospheric backdrop to a wander. They’re near the spa town of Niederbronn-les-Bains, known for its hot springs dating back over 2,000 years. Another option for a jaunt is the village of Oberbronn (half an hour), where visitors can take off on a signposted circular walk past historical sites and an observation tower with grand views of the Upper Rhine Plain. And if you’re craving a big city after all this time in smaller settlements? Strasbourg, an interesting mix of French and German influences, is 40 minutes away.
