It's a mere two kilometres from Camping de l'Ill to the comely Haut-Rhin town of Colmar, the biggest in the Alsace region and niftily set on the Alsace wine route. You can bike from here to town via a peaceful local path and the cycle hire handily available on site – do, however, take care riding back if you've headed into town intent on fully investigating Alsatian wine. Lazy riverside and countryside days – also avec wine, should you so wish – are yours for the taking right on site too, as Camping de l’Ill is on the banks of a small river and home to gorgeous greenery and spectacular views. If you do feel you should explore beyond Colmar/ the site grounds/ the local wine, it's a drive of 20 kilometres from here to Germany (the site's river of Ille is a tributary of the Rhine), and you can also venture out for days of heady hikes among the Jura and Vosges mountains and the beaut landscapes of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Park. A tad confuddled on what to tackle first? Leaf through the extensive info at the site tourist point to figure out where you'd like your Alsace adventure to begin. Quite frankly you'll probably want to spend a significant amount of time just lounging around on your own secluded spot on site (do see the pics to view how handsome it all is), but if 'Just sit quietly and read your book' is guaranteed to make the kids a tad restless, leisurely options are to hand for all ages too. Clamouring kids will probably demand a visit to the pool area first – and how wise they'd be, as it comes with a separate pool, with water toys, all of their very own, alongside the main site pool for the grownups. If they've never tried pétanque before, take them along afterwards to give it a go, or let them conquer you/ learn the art of graceful losing (delete as appropriate) at the football and ping pong tables. You might have to let them win at this last one, as it's likely you'll be too ready to soak up the views and peaceful vibe from here: again, do click on the pics to see how handsome it all is. A snack bar and small shop are open during the summer season to assist in fuelling you all up for all this, and bread and croissants can be ordered on site and are delivered freshly baked in the morning. There's free wifi available at reception too, if you want to do a little more digging into what's around this splendid part of  north-eastern France.

Local attractions

The crackingly scenic town of Colmar is stuffed with sights to see: wander around the Maison des Têtes and the mansion of Maison Pfister, the Maison Zum Kragen and the Quai de la Poissonnerie, or around the Kruteneau market garden district in the south of Colmar known as Little Venice. For history, try the Unterlinden Museum, the Bartholdi Museum, the toy museum and the natural history and ethnography museum, all excellent places to potter around. Colmar also reckons it's the capital of the Alsace wine region, so is def the Haut-Rhin place to bag some Alsatian wine or to set out on the surrounding wine route. If you're after active adventures, a canoeing and kayaking club is a kilometre away along the river, or canters on horseback can be had among the trees of Neuland forest, about five kilometres away. The Colmar-Houssen watersports centre is under 15 minutes' drive away. Have an adrenalised day trip 50 minutes' drive from the site at Breitenbach's Parc Alsace Aventure, where there are treetop trails to weave around, along with a heady range of other adventures including paintball and archery.
