  • Wildlife haven in a village on the banks of the Dronne river
  • A 10-minute drive to Aubeterre-sur-Dronne; 15 minutes to Échourgnac
  • Canoeing, kayaking and fishing on site; shops a short walk away
On the edge of a 13th-century bastide and tucked alongside a curve of the Dronne river, the setting of Camping La Dordogne Verte is a little bit like something plucked from a storybook. But there's nothing fictional about this dog-friendly family site in Périgord Vert… This site is a wildlife haven, very much like its surroundings, where guests can track down cycling trails, wild swimming, mountain biking, tree climbing, hiking or fishing easily enough. The Dordogne has stunning castles, Romanesque churches and prehistoric sites for those wanting a bit of history intertwined in their day trips too. Arguably the most important activities in the Dronne Valley are already sorted by the site, which organises canoeing or kayaking outings from its own pontoon. On the shaded banks, keen anglers can set down for a productive day of fishing. And if those activities don’t appeal at that exact moment, perhaps a paddle or a swim in the Dronne will do the trick? The bastide of Saint-Aulaye has shops and restaurants within 10 minutes’ walk of the site. Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, 10 minutes’ drive away, has an even larger selection of that sort of thing, along with galleries, restaurants and coffee shops. There’s also a public swimming pool 100 metres away from the site. This peaceful place is part of a local eco movement, so they invest in thoughtful revegetation, maintain the banks of the rivers (anglers will be happy to hear) and don’t denature the site with unnecessary construction.

Electric grass pitch (riverside)

Liked: gorgeous, calm campsite wrapped by the serene Dronne river with the charming village in walking distance which has all the grocery and needs covered. Appreciated the personal welcome and choice of spacious pitches, with amenities well looked after and the personal fridge an unexpected bonus. We'll be back on our journeys through the region and highly recommend

Electric grass pitch (riverside)

Liked: Wonderful campsite in beautiful location. We stayed in a riverside pitch which was huge with electricity, water and a fridge. The campsite has a good size swimming pool and water slides that are open in the afternoons. The campsite is on the River Dronne and across the road is a wonderful sandy bank to enjoy the river. You can also kayak from there and there’s an acrobranch for the kids to enjoy too. On the river there’s a restaurant for lunch, dinner or an amazing ice cream or crepe. You can walk up to the village where there are another couple of restaurants and a supermarket. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. A truly wonderful and relaxing stay.

Electric grass pitch (riverside)

Liked: The location is good with proximity to the river and other outdoor activities in the area.

Disliked: The whole campsite was a huge disappointment. Cleanliness and maintenance is a real issue. There are no toilet seats and no toilet paper in the toilets. The swimming pool is edged with scum with sharp trip hazards around the pool that caused my son to cut his foot severely. The water slides are disgustingly dirty. They smell. They're lined with body fat and don’t look like they’ve ever been cleaned. Walk ways are rotten and broken creating more trip hazards. Showers are falling off the walls, most clothes hooks have already fallen off the walls. Pitches are not marked clearly causing people to pitch up in incorrect pitches. Childrens games room and bbq areas are dirty and unkempt. Childrens entertainer blasts a loud siren regularly to encourage participation. It’s hugely annoying and not at all encouraging but more off putting. Receptionist made unsolicited and inappropriate comments. Loud evening entertainment goes on until 12.30 am For what has the potential to be a really great site, this one is a huge let down.

Electric grass pitch (riverside)

Liked: It is a very nice relaxed camping with a lot of activities for the children. They had a blast and that's why we could be relaxed. Also in the surroundings of the camping, there are a lot of activities. In the village and by the lake there are some nice restaurants to have a bite to eat. All in walking distance.

Disliked: The camping is a little outdated and could use a lift up.

Local attractions

With not only the Dordogne but Charente and Gironde nearby too, this well-placed site has lots for guests to fill their days with. In the Périgord Vert, there are pretty little villages, caves, castles and – perhaps the most popular of all – wine tasting at wineries and vineyards (including spots within 10 minutes’ drive of the site). Saint-Émilion (55 minutes’ drive), in particular, is famed for its vintage wines, and the chateaux, wooded hillsides, streams and vineyard scenery are an added bonus. For top scenery, Brantôme (55 minutes) is also a very fierce contender, with medieval and Renaissance architecture. Stop off at the Forêt de la Double (15 minutes) for a good hike among the oak and hazel. The Grand Etang La Jemaye (20 minutes) in the same forest will also please outdoorsy folks, with its ponds, hiking trails and canoe rental. If you’re hungry after those days in the outdoors, pull up in Échourgnac (15 minutes) for a quick visit to the abbey and to haul the tasty La Trappe cheese back to base.
