Dawn patrols, sandy stretches and scenic marinas all add up to swimmingly good hols at Camping la Civelle, a family-friendly site in the seaside resort town of Capbreton in the Aquitaine region of the south of France. This stretch of Landes coastline is a watersports haven: the beaches at Capbreton, Hossegor and Seignosse (all within 15 minutes’ drive) are a World Surfing League Champsionship tour hotspot, so grab your board and get stoked for catching some primo waves. If you can’t quite get the hang of hanging 10, don’t worry – you can forego the dawn patrol and hang on a jetski, paddleboard or boat instead. The Capbreton beaches are a top spot for sandy strolls, sandcastles, paddling, swimming and lazing in the sun too, and there’s a shuttle to bring you from A to B. For a more laidback day by the water, swim back to site for a dip in the on-site pool, a relaxing game of pétanque or a siesta in a hammock among the trees. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, get that barbecue started and settle in for some outdoor eats. Want a break from bangers and burgers? Pick up some little bites from the on-site grocery or snack bar, make a pitstop at the Capbreton port for fish fresh from the boat, or nab a table at one of the town’s swanky joints for a meal you don’t have to cook yourself.

Local attractions

When you’ve had your fill of waves, there’s lots to explore in this part of Aquitaine and there’s an easy way to get started: Vélodyssee. The 1,200-kilometre cycle route, which stretches from Brittany in the north to Hendaye on the Spanish border, passes through Capbreton, giving you fab sea views as you pedal along its length (or bits of it, at least). Take a break from the saddle with the less energy-fuelled pursuits of quad biking, miniature golf, go-karting and electric skateboarding (the latter through the forest in Labenne), all within 10 minutes’ drive of home base, then ramp the activity level back up with a day of swinging from tree to tree and firing globs of paint at your friends at Adrénaline Parc in Moliets, about half an hour away. There’s plenty nearby to keep the kids entertained if you haven’t managed to convince them that exercising is a good way to spend their hols: there are two waterparks within 20 minutes of La Civelle, and the Pop Corn Labyrinthe and Labenne zoo (both less than 15 minutes away) are worthy stops. If they’ve got energy still to burn, go a little further afield for Base de Pop (40 minutes) for a splashing time on inflatables and slides.
