  • Peaceful and family-friendly campsite at Lapeyrouse in the Auvergne
  • Combrailles Vélorail five minutes’ drive; Château Rocher half an hour
  • Spacious grass pitches; heated swimming pool and fishing lake on site
When you’re seeking seclusion in hilly Auvergne countryside, but still need lots to do to keep the family entertained, Camping Les Marins comes up trumps. A couple of minutes’ drive from the tiny rural hamlet of Lapeyrouse, this peaceful site has a heated swimming pool (open in high season) and a fishing lake well-stocked with giant carp. You can take cooling dips from the pocket-sized lakeside beach, or explore its shoreline by hired pedal boat or canoe. And if the kids are still asking for more stuff to do, take them to play volleyball and tennis at the municipal courts in Lapeyrouse. The well-kept grass pitches are divided by neatly trimmed hedges to keep everything nice and private, and they’re spacious enough to accommodate all but the largest motorhomes and caravans. At reception there’s a small shop selling emergency groceries – so if you’ve forgotten something, there’s no need to panic – and while you’re there, order bread and pastries to be delivered every morning to your pitch. Depending on the time of year, there’s also a licensed snack bar open to ward off family hunger attacks.

Local attractions

To acquaint yourselves with the local area, board the Vélorail des Combrailles (five minutes’ drive) for a pedal-powered jaunt through the fields and woodlands of the Auvergne along a former railway line. Most kids will relish orienteering adventures in the Forêt des Colettes (20 minutes), and sporty families can perform feats of bravery on the rope courses and climbing walls at Accro-Sioule Kids Accrobranche (25 minutes). Your younger progeny will likely love you forever if you treat them to rides on donkeys at Asinerie de la Vioune (15 minutes), where you can also buy artisan soaps made from donkey milk and cute stuffed toys. More cuddly animals are found at La P’tite Ferme de Boussat, home to rare-breed sheep and goats (plus lambs and kids in springtime). Sneak in a history lesson with a visit to the spectacular crag-top remains of Château Rocher (half an hour) overlooking the dramatic Sioule river gorge, or stop by the Musée de la Paléontologie (20 minutes) to marvel at the displays of prehistoric fish bones and fossils excavated from the ancient crater lake at Menat.
