Electric optional grass pitch (large)

Liked: Lovely quiet spot close to the river. Very early in the season. Friendly staff.

Disliked: Some facilities on site not yet open. Mostly grass pitches but one or two hardstanding areas for small motorhomes. Somes of the facilities could do with a bit of investment.

Electric optional grass pitch (large)

Liked: River location, refurbished toilet/shower block, large pitch (although the sizes vary a lot!) snack bar & English speaking team. The river looks like a good place to fly fish but too shallow for our inflatable kayak. There is a hire place next door that offers more appropriate (rigid) ones!

Disliked: Not dislikes but observations. The site needs some TLC but appears to be a works in progress and the site is pretty steep.

Electric optional grass pitch (large)

Liked: This is a lovely site is still a work in progress but yet already has more amenities than other sites that are fully completed. Good new toilet block with toilet roll, water and hand soap even a bin and sanitary bags. New showers that last a long time when pushed and hanging space. Dishwashing double sinks with draining boards. Large private hedged pitches. Kids trampoline, football table, cafe with drinks and food. Pool area decking being upgraded and new sun beds. Access to the river and canoe hire next to the site.

Electric optional grass pitch (large)

Liked: The area is gorgeous, the pitch was a good size, the owner very welcoming and helpful and with a town nearby with a Spar, a very lovely stay.

Disliked: The weather was awful, we managed to have a drink in the 1 1/2 hr break in the rain on the bars decking, that was lovely with the river flowing past.

Electric optional grass pitch (large)

Liked: The site in the gorges of the Sioule is magnificent: trees and trees and more trees. Lovely river. The owner was helpful. They are in the middle of rebuilding the site. What has been done is good but there is a lot of work still to do

Disliked: The access could be difficult for a large motorhome.

Local attractions

Canoe trips are available next to the site and a horse riding stable is a couple of kilometres away for placid pursuits close to base. Another nearby option is Château de Chouvigny, five minutes’ drive away at the entrance to the Chouvigny gorges: this 13th-century stronghold is privately owned but open to tours in summer and with info in French, English and Dutch. Another castle is 15 minutes’ drive away at Château Rocher, made up of fortress remains overlooking the Sioule river valley on a cliff high above the river; guided tours are available in July and August. Or delve a bit further back in time with a mosey around the ruins and archaeological sites of Menat (20 minutes) and its 11th-century abbey that’s one of the oldest in Auvergne, now home to a palaeontological museum exhibiting finds from the region. Car connoisseurs might like a look at Bellenaves Automobile Museum (20 minutes) and its 50 vintage vehicles, heritage days and regular events. Five minutes from here at Vicq, Château de la Mothe is a 13th-century stately home surrounded by a moat, with rooms reconstructing the life of its Renaissance owner Lord Vicq. Vulcania theme park is 55 minutes’ drive away.
