Green and peaceful site near Clohars-Carnoët in southern Finistère
A 20-minute drive from Quimperlé; half an hour from Lorient

Many travellers are fond of Finistère, but comparatively few venture to its quieter southern coast. The area around this site is great for peaceful Breton breaks, whether you're heading for the beach or inland to handsome towns like Quimperlé. On top of that, this park is within easy reach of the Laïta, a nearby river that's rather easy on the eye (five minutes' drive). The opposite bank is home to the lakes, valleys and forests of neighbouring Morbihan, all of which are worth exploring by car or bike or on foot. Au Vieux Moulin is set in a splendidly secluded spot: guests here will likely enjoy the sheer peace and quiet of the place, as well as simple pleasures like waking up to stunning views over the hills. Giving the driving a rest is also an option thanks to nifty on-site bike hire (two well-marked circular trails around Clohars-Carnoët come highly recommended). If you fancy a bit of alfresco cooking, you're more than welcome to set up a barbecue and make the most of your time in the open air. Gourmand guests can also make tracks for the centre of Clohars-Carnoët (five minutes' drive), where a baker, deli, patisserie and supermarket are on hand. For coastal crêpes and some salty sea air, head down to the beach at Le Pouldu (five minutes).

Route directions

At the church at Clohars-Carnoët, head towards Le Pouldu for 1.2 kilometres. After the roundabout, continue towards Le Pouldu for 800 metres; then take the second asphalt road on your left. The site is located just after the windmill.

Local attractions

Fancy spending a day or two close to base? You'll find plenty of local options here: kayaking up the Laïta is a joy when the weather is fine, as is heading across the river on the handy ferry that connects Le Pouldu to Guidel marina. Ice cream, anyone? For nearby explores on dry land, lace up your boots and head along the coast on the GR34 trail. Alternatively, make tracks for the ruined Cistercian abbey at Saint-Maurice (10 minutes' drive) or check out the local animal park (10 minutes). Quimperlé (20 minutes) is a hub for medieval art and architecture; if you're feeling peckish, make sure to add the town's artisan biscuit factory to your list. Head to Lorient (half an hour) for smashing seafood, the Port-Louis fort and the ferry to the nearby Île de Groix, a spectacular offshore wildlife haven (crossing time 50 minutes). Further afield, Vannes (one hour) is a must-see for anyone passing through the area around the Gulf of Morbihan. This walled town hosts several festivals throughout the year, while permanent attractions include a butterfly house and aquarium that make particularly kid-pleasing days out.
