  • Peaceful, simple Landéda site five minutes' walk from the beach
  • 45 minutes' drive from Océanopolis centre in Brest
  • 200 metres from the GR34 long-distance coast path
Ooh la la, take a little look at this lovely Landéda location – Camping Penn-Enez is a two-hectare site almost at the very tip of the Sainte-Marguerite Peninsula, two kilometres from the amenities of Sainte-Marguerite village. There’s much to enjoy along this cracking stretch of coastline: hikers and cyclists can take in craggy cliffs and coves along the GR34 coastal path while beach buffs make a beeline for the white sands, the nearest of which is a five-minute stroll away. Watersports, scuba diving, horse riding and boat trips are all popular picks around here for fresh-air frolics, and there’s also easy access to an aquarium, amusement park and archaeological sites nearby for your days out. The site itself isn’t crammed with facilities (who needs ‘em when there are so many of life’s simple pleasures on hand?) but there is a playground for les enfants, and staff can help organise bike hire to aid your wanderings. Vitally important drinks and ice creams can be picked up at reception, and in summer there’s also a little shop with groceries and daily deliveries of fresh bread and pastries. Further self-catering supplies can be picked up at a supermarket a few minutes’ drive away, although locals also recommend heading out onto the beach at low tide to see what sorts of shellfish you can forage for a feast.

Local attractions

There are beaches all around this pretty peninsula – it’ll take you about five minutes to walk to the nearest, Plougouri, or 20 minutes to trot along the coast path to the larger swathe of Sainte-Marguerite beach. Keep going on that GR34 coast path and you’ve got around 1,800 kilometres ahead of you (don’t feel obliged to do the whole thing…) It’s off to Aberwrac’h, 10 minutes away, if you’re up for negotiating a sea kayak or paddleboard through the islands that run along the coast, or if you’d like to plunge into the deep on a scuba diving day. Boat trips to the Île Vierge lighthouse can be had from here too, or you can walk out to the old fort on Île Cézon at low tide. For a fab family day out, pack everyone into the car and drive for half an hour to reach Récré des 3 Cures amusement park (where there’s a mini farm as well as loads of rides and an indoor play area), or keep going to Brest (40 minutes) for the excellent Océanopolis aquarium and ocean discovery centre.
