  • Friendly site in the Loire Valley, 15 minutes' drive from Tours
  • Opposite an amusement park and 10 minutes' walk from sailing lake
  • Indoor and outdoor pools, plus wellness lodge with hot tub and sauna
A wellness lodge with sauna, hot tub and massages, plus indoor and outdoor swimming pools – sounds like the kind of place that takes the rehabilitation of frazzled folks rather seriously. Yep, if you’re seeking a serene spot for some leisurely Loire Valley lounging, you’d do well to consider Camping La Mignardière. The pool provision here is all designed to keep your aquatic activities as comfy as possible, whatever the weather throws at you – no tentative toe-dipping necessary as the outdoor pool is heated, and there’s an under-cover version too should you decree the day too chilly. In warmer weather kids can spend their time happily splashing about in the paddling pool while you supervise from a spot stretched out on a sun lounger nearby. And when it’s time for a break from the waters, games of tennis, football and table tennis will get you up and about, and there’s a playground to entertain the tiddlers. Also on hand to make your hols run smoothly are the excellent site team, who’ve received universal praise from previous guests for their friendly, helpful manner. As well as offering advice on activities and attractions, they’ll also be the lovely people handing over your food at the grocery shop and the snack bar. They won’t, however, light your barbecue for you, but you’re welcome to do that for yourself and cook up a fab feast over the coals (should the grocery store not fulfil all your needs, it’ll take you mere minutes to get to Ballan-Miré for a supermarket, bakery, butcher and the like). And what are they likely to recommend you spend your days doing? Well, if you’ve brought small fry with you, they’ll probably suggest you pop to the excellent amusement park over the road, or maybe walk for 10 minutes to the Lac des Bretonnières for walking, sailing and fishing. Perhaps they’ll mention that there’s a riding stables and squash club 10 minutes’ walk away, a golf course 10 minutes’ drive away and a canoe rental place 20 minutes away. And they’ll point out that Tours is 15 minutes away, as is the famed château at Villandry, plus you’re also close to Amboise, the other châteaux of the Loire Valley, bike routes… Looks like you’d best sign up for another hot tub and massage sesh to calm down after all that, just to be sure.

Local attractions

If you’re looking for fuss-free entertainment for the tinies, pop into reception to pick up details of the reduced entry fee for the amusement park over the road – hours of fun await over here, with pony rides, trampolines, miniature golf, a summer toboggan run some of the fun features that await. A little further away is the Lac des Bretonnières park, where a watersports centre runs windsurfing and sailing lessons, and there are walking trails and fishing spots around the lake edge. A 10-minute trot takes you to a riding centre for pony and horse riding lessons and countryside jaunts, or you could paddle off on a canoe trip on the Loire or the Cher river from a rental centre 15 minutes away. Other sporting endeavours nearby include the golf course 10 minutes away, the indoor karting track five minutes away and the bike routes that run along the banks of the Loire. You can't possibly leave this area without visiting at least one/some of the famed châteaux that are strewn around the Loire Valley. Take a deep breath and consider the formal gardens of Villandry, the turrets of Azay-le-Rideau, the medieval family tours at Langeais, the crumbling pile that is Chinon or the mind-bending Chenonceau, which actually straddles the river. All are very much worth your time, and you’ll not have to expend too much effort to get there as they’re all within a 45-minute drive. For city wanderings, start in Tours to visit the cathedral, botanic gardens and fine arts museum and poke around for foodie pickings in the covered markets. A little further along the Loire are the medieval centres of Amboise and Blois (with yet more châteaux) and Saumur, a particular fave for fans of sparkling wine.
