  • Two-hectare lakeside estate surrounded by nature in Val-et-Loire
  • Blois and the spectacular castles of Chambord and Cheverny 10km away
  • Two fishing lakes, rod and bike rental, sauna and Finnish bath
Ten kilometres from the hillside city of Blois and the splendiferous châteaus of Chambord and Cheverny lies a handsome lakeside wildlife haven, The Lodges of Blois-Chambord in Mont-près-Chambord. The site is set across two hectares surrounding two fishing lakes, with accommodation areas that have been carefully laid out by the friendly and welcoming owners to give lovely lake views. You're a mere five-minute stroll from a natural bathing lake in Mont-près-Chambord (open every day during July and August) and five kilometres from a cracking canoeing and kayaking centre in Vineuil. Apart from its spectacularly scenic surrounds and lush lakeside setting, the best bit about this park is that it has a sauna and a Finnish bath for lazy leisure days on site, and a bike rental service to cover your days of touring the local area on two wheels. For exploring à pied, plenty of walking trails lie around the park for gentle woodland strolls through the two nearby forests of Boulogne and Russy. Rod rental is available on site too, so you can while away the odd hour or four quite effortlessly here too. To fit with the outdoorsy vibe of a site such as this, barbecues are actively encouraged here, so pick up a few saucissons for toasty evening grill ups by the water. Alternatively, set down the tongs and sample tasty local tidbits among the fine eateries of nearby Bracieux and Blois. All accommodation has an open plan living and dining area, as well as a kitchenette kitted out with a microwave, a toaster, a fridge, hobs and coffee maker. Free wifi is available across the park.

Local attractions

Right near the site is a big natural bathing pool, open and lifeguarded every day during July and August for summertime splashes and beach-based sunbathing. Also nearby are two big national forests – Boulogne and Russy – both within two kilometres, for peaceful woodland strolls and shaded cycle rides. Continue through the forest and you'll reach the spectacular Château de Chambord, one of France's most famed royal retreats comprising 400 rooms, more than 80 staircases and 365 fireplaces, all among a vast park covering about 5,000 hectares. Also in the immediate vicinity are several other active outdoorsy options: hop in a hot air balloon basket for scenic flights over the valley, or try canoeing on the Loire and Cher from Vineuil, 10 minutes' drive away. The waymarked 'Loire à vélo' cycle route also runs close to the site for rides to several spectacular Loire castles. Local Cheverny plonk can be procured from an establishment 200 meters from the estate, which is handy seeing as though you'll be partaking in plenty of barbecues back at base. To sample lush local cuisine cooked by expert French chefs, head over to Bracieux and Blois, where there are heaps of fine eating establishments. Heaps of annual events take place too around this royally splendid setting, such as the sound and light show at the Château de Blois; classical music concerts among the courtyard and reception rooms of Château de Chambord; and the festival of gardens at Château de Chaumont.
