Just a few minutes… That's your pedalling commuting time from Au Cœur de Vendôme to fab old Vendôme, sitting pretty on the Loir river in the department of Loir-et-Cher. If even this short ride seems too taxing (as well it might, you're on a lazy French holiday), it's even less faff to get onto the river from the site, by hiring a canoe to take out directly from the grounds. If that seems too taxing still, angle for peaceful fishing time along the river's edge, or settle down waterside with a picnic for splendid riverside views – and perhaps a visit from a few curious geese… Au Coeur de Vendôme is a family-friendly site a few minutes' bike ride or a short walk from Vendôme. It's 15 minutes' drive from here to the recreational lake and sandy beach of Villiers-sur-Loir, where you can get out onto the water again with the assistance of the local sailing school. And if you can't be faffed to drive? A free shuttle bus runs to Villiers in July and August. The site has lots laid on for littlies, including a spacious playground with climbing net, a games room with table football and pool, and a kids' club every summer morning where they can get messily stuck into activities, games and art sessions. Buy basic groceries, bread and pastries at the small site shop, or fresh local produce at the Friday market in Vendôme market or in Saint-Ouen, about a kilometre away.

Local attractions

This Loire valley and Touraine region is crammed with old architecture, lush vineyards and jaw-droppingly stunning châteaux within easy day trip distance – or you could just travel around by foot or bike for river strolls, picnics, fishing or hiking the many trails of the Vendômois. Vendôme is the third biggest town in the Loir-et-Cher department and one of France's designated towns of art and history. There's stacks to see around its medieval centre, such as the former castle of the Vendôme counts, overlooking the town; the 11th-century abbey, also housing the town museum, and half-timbered houses aplenty in the town centre. As you're in the Loire valley, châteaux trips should also be in abudance: at your day trip disposal are famed French piles such as the Château de Blois, about 40 minutes' drive away, and the Château de Chaumont, Château de Chambord and the Château d'Amboise, all within about 50 minutes.
