  • Small-scale site on a family-run Champagne estate in Meurville
  • A 20-minute drive from Forêt d’Orient Regional Natural Park
  • Tutored Champagne tastings on site six evenings a week
If it’s your firm belief that a holiday should feature a glass or few of top-notch bubbles, you’ll no doubt be most pleased with a stay at Camping La Sauleraie. This Champagne-Ardenne site is on the edge of the village of Meurville and within easy walking distance of several fine Côte-des-Bar Champagne producers. The very closest of those, however, is right there where you’ll be staying. Yes indeed, this is your chance to stay right there at a family Champagne house, where you’ll be surrounded by the vineyards and the Perron family will invite you to a tutored Champagne tasting in the cellars (held every day from Monday to Saturday at 6pm). It may be the drinks that first capture your attention, but the site itself is rather lovely too. It’s part of a wooded plot of 8600 square metres, with an enclosed pond that’s popular with birds and other wildlife. From your accommodation you’ll be able to take a scenic walk through fields, woods and vineyards, heading up the slopes to look out over the vineyards at sunset. Facilities on site include a play area with swings and a slide, and a barbecue area with picnic tables for your outdoor meals. The amenities building houses toilets, showers and sinks on one side and washing-up and laundry sinks on the other.

Liked: This was a fantastic find. The pitches are large and secluded with all facilities. The loo block was very functional and extremely clean. The best thing was the champagne tasting. A lovely family run estate with great value and taste champagne.

Tsukiyo 1 bedroom lodge

Liked: The family were so welcoming to us, even after a very long day of harvesting they were enthusiastic about teaching us about how champagne is made and delivered a very professional tasting experience. They provided us with a vegetarian hamper for dinner which was had had so much effort and thoughtfulness put into it, homemade quiche, salad, puddings, local cheese, fresh bread, and of course champagne! And again in the morning, they provided us with a fantastic breakfast at our guest house. The guest house itself was beautifully presented and clean, very comfortable to stay in. The facilities were clean and working efficiently. It was so lovely to to stay here, we are so grateful to this family for hosting us and allowing us to experience the rural side of France. We will be recommending this stay to all our friends and relatives.

Disliked: Not a true dislike, however would just mention that the guest rooms get very hot during the summer evenings and due to the mosquitoes we had to keep all the windows/doors closed. For extra comfort, perhaps mosquito nets over the windows or a fan could be provided. However, this did not have a big impact on our stay as we absolutely LOVED it!

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Quiet site with small but clean facilities. Champagne tasting and the information about the family history and champagne production was a nice addition. The benches to sit out and eat were also a nice addition.

Disliked: The grass on the pitch was a little over grown and in need of some tidying up. Not a dislike but the entrance into the pitches was tight, we were 7.4m long and I think it would be a challenge to access if you were much longer than this. Location of reception was not completely clear which is at the champagne production vineyard.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very pretty and quiet. Toilet block clean with good quality showers. Small town short drive away charming with good food.

Disliked: Extremely unfriendly reception by male proprietor (wife more friendly next day). We along with others were unaware that there was a slim checking-in time of one hour between 5 and 6pm and when he turned up he just scowled and grunted "have you got a reservation"? in French, (I do but others waiting there didn't speak French) and marched to the office. Never once during our instructions or enquiries did he even smile despite my good French and my husband's very good efforts (and lots of smiles from us - I almost made it a personal challenge to get him to smile!). We didn't bother going to the champagne tasting as we thought it wouldn't be much fun! The toilet looked like a hospital and compared to other campsites not any care at all had been made to make it pleasant. I think there was a check-out time of 9 to 11am; again narrow; other times office was closed and we had to leave passports as a 'deposit' for return of the security key as we did not have cash and he was immovable that he needed cash to hand over the security key ie we were beholden to what suited him as we had to get our passports back! It is a village with nothing there and therefore I do think a bread morning delivery service as in other campsites in rural areas would be quite a necessity. Been to many campsites of different types, commercial and non-commercial, each with their different benefits, quirks and charms, but this didn't win on any level. Main thing is they just didn't seem to care. Give this one a miss.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Fantastic champagne tasting with the host at 6pm, nice small camping area but the amenities would benefit from updating.

Disliked: Would have been useful to know that the check in area is in a different place to the campsite before arrival as was quite confusing. Also only 2 electric points on-site so a longer lead is needed.

Liked: Small, quiet site in a valley surrounded by vineyards. Fairly basic but everything present and correct. Owner offered champagne tastings, which was an extra treat beyond the average site.

Local attractions

This site makes a great base for exploring the Côte-des-Bar Champagne tourist route, taking in lots of sparkling samples and making your way through lovely landscapes and traditional villages like Bar-sur-Aube and Bar-sur-Seine. The area isn’t all about the wineries though – a short drive of 20 minutes or so from the site gets you to the Forêt d’Orient Regional Natural Park for all sorts of outdoor activities including hikes, birdwatching, golf, lake swimming, canoeing and parachuting. You might also like to climb up into the trees at Grimpobranches (half an hour’s drive), meet native beasts at Space Wildlife Orient Forest (25 minutes) or visit the 18th-century Moulin de Dosches (35 minutes). Elsewhere nearby, you can make trips to the Maison Renoir in Essoyes (25 minutes), the Cistercian Abbey of Clairvaux (20 minutes), the Crystal Museum in Bayel (20 minutes) or the family-friendly Nigloland theme park (10 minutes), for a day of rides and shows.
