  • Wooden microlodges near a rural village in the Champagne-Ardenne
  • A 20-minutes drive to Sézanne and half an hour to Provins
  • Near the Seine; bakery, shops and restaurants within walking distance
Here's an unusual spot for families and couples seeking a peaceful but memorable rural escape… La Gare de Lurey Conflans offers up handily equipped wooden cabins tucked among mature trees in the grounds of a former country railway station on the outskirts of Esclavolles-Lurey in the Champagne-Ardenne region. With their wonky roofs and crooked windows, these nattily designed, hobbit-like microlodges are packed with character. Each is equipped with handy cooking essentials in kitchenettes, plus hot showers and thoughtful extras like barbecues in a private seating area so you can enjoy leisurely alfresco feasts on summer evenings. For stays here, everything you need should be close to hand, so you could easily abandon the car and walk everywhere. For a supply of fresh daily baguettes, the artisan bakery is right opposite the old train station – and within 10 minutes’ walk there are several small shops including a supermarket for basics, and a butcher for barbecue goodies, plus a choice of pizza takeaways and cosy bistros in the sleepy village centre.

Grande Cabane de la Gare 2 bedroom microlodge

Liked: The hut is super cute, and the owners very helpful and immediately communicative. The place is very peaceful also and clean and tidy.

Disliked: The hut, whilst cute, is very small. We are relatively short family so it was just about ok, although the lack of air inside at night in the full cabin was a concern - it wasn't overly hot which was lucky, but still we struggled to sleep without aircon in such a small space. Also, we had understood the hut was in the countryside, with small pretty villages nearby. But this was on the edge of a small town, so felt relatively urban. There was also no wifi, which for travellers with no data was a bit difficult to manage.

From the manager: Bonjour Louise. Cordialement, Sarah

Local attractions

Step out of your cabin and you’re out in nature straight away – there are numerous walks to be had on quiet rural lanes, as well as bike rides around the Lac de la forêt d’Orient (an hour’s drive) and more hiking and cycling on the Haute-Seine Troyes Cycle Trail (half an hour). There are fishing ponds within 25 minutes’ drive, and more adventurous souls can paddle down the Aube or Seine rivers in canoes (10 minutes). Pretty rural towns that are worth exploring include Sézanne (20 minutes), with tree-lined walks along its old defensive walls and a massive Gothic church topped with a Renaissance tower, while medieval Provins (half an hour) has old tithe barns, history museums and cobbled streets lined with half-timbered houses. Doubtless, when you’re in Champagne you’ll be wanting to sample some of its famous produce. The closest Coteaux Champenois champagne cellars are Côte de Sézanne (20 minutes), where you can tour the production process, taste the wares and buy a bottle of two as well.
