French forest camping? Have it at Camping de la Forêt, set in the huge Joux fir forest between the departments of Doubs and Loue. This is an outdoorsy area, popular with hikers and climbers as well as cyclists and mountain bikers, with the 42km Route des Sapins cycle path running through the forest and plenty of hiking and other cycling trails nearby. A roomy outdoor area for football, volleyball and pétanque, a play area with swings, a slide and outdoor toys are around for getting active on site, along with a games room with ping pong table and football table; board games are at this last too if you want to take things down a notch. The campsite also has a heated outdoor pool and regular summer entertainment including theme nights, karaoke, sports tournaments and foodie events.

Local attractions

Hiking, cycling, mountain biking, horse riding and birdwatching are all easily accessible in the Doubs department and the area around Camping de la Forêt. A tennis court is available a few minutes' drive away and a karting and paintball centre is nearby. The Route des Sapins runs for 42 kilometres between Levier and Champagnole and through the forest along several rivers including the Doubs, the Loue and the Lison. Cave fans are a short drive away from some spectacular sights, such as those near Frasne, the Grottes des Moidons, Grottes d'Osselle and the deeply popular Gouffre de Poudrey. For bathing and swimming, Lac St Point and Lac de Remoray are a 30-minute drive away; within 50km is department capital city Besançon, and the Swiss border is a 40-minute drive from the site.
