Lack of swimming spots getting you down? Then get set for a wet and wild break at Villatent at Camping La Roche d'Ully, a fantastic Franche-Comté site with free entry to a waterpark. With views over the Jura Mountains and a bunch of well-kept facilities, the site staff here work hard to look after the environment. Their efforts benefit both the local wildlife (this land is part of a designated bird reserve) and guests, who have access to well-kept grounds and an organic vegetable garden. Whether you end up walking, pedalling or taking the car, the village of Ornans is two kilometres away. Home to a handful of restaurants, long stretches of the peaceful Loue river and a museum dedicated to 19th-century French painter Gustave Courbet, this hub of activity is handy to have close by. Back at base, it's a short stroll over the way to Nautiloue waterpark, where site guests have free entry. Indoor and outdoor pools, a waterslide area and a relaxation zone complete with a sauna, hammam and jacuzzi will surely help to cast off any cobwebs, and if you've further energy to burn off there are multisports pitches and table tennis tables back on site. For food, you can choose between the site's bar and restaurant, which is open for three daily sittings in the high season. When things are quieter, it's easy to sort yourself something good in your canvas safari tent's well-equipped kitchen area.

Local attractions

Ornans (five minutes' drive) is in the Loue Valley, a spot well-known for its bike-friendly trails and scenic terrain. This stretch of the river is also popular with boaters, who can bring their own launch or take advantage of the several kayak and canoe hire options in town. Finally, there's a lot of scope for climbing here, with full information available at the town's handy tourist information centre. Further afield, it's a half-hour drive to Besançon, a well-preserved provincial town where you can visit the birthplace of Victor Hugo, admire the mountain views from atop the Fort de Bregille or head to outlet shops, cinemas and a full-sized ice rink. Families with kids may also appreciate a trip to visit the furry residents at La Ferme aux Lamas du Doubs (20 minutes), where a range of llama-themed activities await. Orient deer park (half an hour) has more prancing creatures that you can admire, plus kilometres of gorgeous forest trails to explore.
