  • Family-friendly site surrounded by lake beaches and wild waterways
  • Fishing, swimming and canoeing/kayaking 8 kilometres away in Mesnois
  • Outdoor pool, restaurant, bar and fishing pond
Jura lakes, anyone? But of course. For this Jura lake district site is among the region's many bodies of blue waters and lakeside beaches, for many days of peaceful fishing, wild swimming, lake sailing, canoeing and kayaking... and then many (more) days venturing by car, foot or bike around the 2,000 or so vineyards in the immediate surroundings: all sounds jolly jolly good. Set in the Jura lakes region close to the Haut-Jura Regional Natural Park, Camping La Prairie is a quiet family-friendly site, a few hundred metres from its local river, about six kilometres from the riverside and watersports town of Mesnois and four from the two lakes of Clairvaux. Hikes to the crashing cascades of Jura waterfalls are within easy reach too; plenty of pretty Franche-Comté towns around are around for eats and souvenirs, and if you fancy a day trip and yet more lake, the beaut waters of Geneva are about an hour and a half's drive away. But do determine to have some time on site too, as it's been well set up for cosy and comfy family times. A pool (with mini slide for mini swimmers) is here for those who still yearn after watery days, there's a fishing pond to try your luck at, and the site has plenty of room for kids (and energetic grownups) to run around. There's also a playground, a TV room and free wifi, all of which should keep the kids nicely distracted/occupied if need be. For eats, pick up essentials and fresh bread at the small grocery store, settle down at the site restaurant and bar for food and tipples, or source supplies aplenty in Boissia, Mesnois or at the Clairvaux-les-Lacs Wednesday market, to bring back to base for a barbecue. The site has free wifi.

Local attractions

Camping La Prairie is deep in the Jura lake district, a few kilometres from the spectacular waters of Lacs de Clairvaux and close to leisure lakes as well as the wilder waters of Étival and Ilay, under 20 minutes' drive away. The spectacular Hérisson Falls, a listed natural heritage site, are also within 20 minutes, and the cascades of La Frasnée are within 15. At Clairvaux, make for the main Grand de Lac, suitable for swimming, canoeing, pedalo and boat trips, fishing and windsurfing, all among a peaceful vibe free from motorboats and other noisy craft aren't allowed. The beaches on both lakes are sandy, lifeguarded and suitable for families; other Jura lakes in the same boat include Chalain, under 20 minutes' drive away, and Vouglans, within 25. At Mesnois, go fishing, swimming, canoeing and kayaking in the Ain river, available within half a kilometre or so from town. There are two hefty waterfalls hikes from here too: an hour and a half to the Hérisson Falls, and about three to the ruined castle of Beauregard. You can also drive up to several of the local viewpoints, overlooking the lakes as well as the green expanses of the Jura vineyards.
