If you’re itching to get outside for explores in northern France, make your way to Domaine Les Caletes, a family-friendly place by Colleville’s fishing lake, in the Seine-Maritime department. Get your fresh air adventures off to a good start with a stroll around the lake, or make the most of the well-stocked ponds with a spot of fishing – the resident trout, pike and carp should keep you busy. If fishing doesn’t appeal, the scenic setting of this place puts a bunch of other outdoorsy stuff – like hiking, cycling and kayaking – on the agenda, so you’re sure to find an activity to suit. Or you could always head to the Normandy coast, a mere 15-minute drive away, for seaside days and craggy jaunts (Étretat, known for its rock formations, is half an hour away). The setup at base is geared to spending time outside, too: there’s a playground for the nippers, while the play areas among the trees are ideal for hide and seek sessions. On top of that, the whole gang can join in with a game or two on the pétanque court. When it comes to eats, grilled grub is on the menu at the barbecue area. Other practical stuff on site includes a toilet block and launderette.

Local attractions

If you fancy stretching your legs, a pathway from the site to nearby coastal town Fécamp takes around an hour and a quarter on foot or 20 minutes by bike (it’s a 10-minute drive, if you don’t fancy the exercise). However you get there, Fécamp has a few things to keep the whole gang busy. Woody Park is a fab choice for outdoor shenanigans, with treetop adventure courses, paintball and laser games. Take the thrills to the water instead with the likes of sailing, kayaking, jetskiing and paddleboarding, or spend some time in the Fécamp Casino. Dial down the extreme activity altogether with a leisurely stroll around Louanne gardens (10 minutes). A browse around the Musée du Chocolat chocolate museum (five minutes) or the Musée des Pêcheries (15 minutes), which explores the history of Fécamp and the fishing industry, would also be a fine option, as is a tour of the impressive Palais Bénédictine palace (15 minutes). When it’s time to pick up the pace again, there’s a leisure centre over at Lake Caniel (20 minutes) with all sorts of activities, including waterskiing, pedalos, miniature golf, bowling, sledging, mountain bike rental, roller skating and karting… as well as a bar and restaurant (all that effort requires some food and drink to keep you going).
