  • Leafy family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from Mediterranean beach
  • A 30-minute drive from Perpignan and Narbonne, 40 minutes from Spain
  • Heated pool, snack bar, bike rental and a high-season bread service
When hols on the Mediterranean appeal, but you don’t want to fight for every inch of beach space, make tracks for Camping Domaine de la Palme, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the medieval town of La Palme on Languedoc-Roussillon’s Audoise coast. The site’s roughly 15 minutes from long sandy stretches along the coast – well-placed for beachy swims, leisurely seaside strolls and, with a trip to Les Coussoules (15 minutes) a lesson or two in sand yachting. It’s also about five minutes from base to spots on Étang de la Palme where guests can try out kitesurfing and windsurfing. Prefer to abandon the car during stays? Bike hire on site should handily sort pedal-based explores. In the Narbonnaise en Méditerranée Natural Regional Park, this is a particularly leafy site, with tons of natural shade to cool off in after days out on the water. It’s also got a heated outdoor pool (with a paddling pool for the kids and massaging jets for the grownups), so swimming away stresses is a cinch. Those guided by the whims of their stomachs won’t have to fret here: breakfast and ice cream are served daily in the snack bar and, during high season, the restaurant is open for evening meals twice a week. There’s daily bread service on site too, and it’s a 10-minute walk into La Palme to the town’s supermarkets, bakery, convenience stores and restaurants.

Local attractions

Once able to prise oneself from the beaches hereabouts, start inland excursions with a stop in La Palme to wander about its historic medieval centre (about five minutes’ drive), then venture further afield with trips to the city of Perpignan and the town of Narbonne, both of which are 30 minutes away. Head to the latter for Roman remains, a museum of archaeology (housed in a particularly spectacular building) and the Palais des Archevêques, and opt for the former for museums, the Palace of the Kings of Majorca and the riverside area of Têt. Guests can also drive just 10 minutes beyond Perpignan to reach the Spanish border. Carcassonne (55 minutes) is a must too for wandering the UNESCO-listed medieval citadel, visiting castles and châteaux, getting an education at the museum of inquisition, and tantalising taste buds on a chocolate and wine walking tour. Thoughts of wine get juices flowing? The site’s a little over half an hour from a handful of winery tours and tastings. Travel back to the past with visits to the nearby Cathar castles (within an hour) and Fontfroide Abbey (35 minutes), or opt for some present-day, kid-friendly activity at the nearby waterpark (15 minutes) and Sigean African Reserve (20 minutes).
