Seeking a serene sojourn in the Cévennes? Owners Stéphanie and Olivier pride themselves on the friendly, relaxed vibe at Camping Le Font du Merle, a peaceful place on the banks of the Gardon river and within a few minutes’ drive of the villages of Branoux-les-Taillades and La Levade. There’s plenty of space to chill out around the site, much of it among the trees to ensure shade for those who need a cool spot on warmer days. Lazy days can be spent fishing on the river by the site or stretched out on a sun lounger by the pool; a playground, pétanque court, basketball hoop and ping pong table are all handily set up next to the pool to keep more restless sorts amused. Also next to the pool is the bar-restaurant, which opens its doors in high season for breakfasts, drinks, meals and ice creams to eat in, take away or devour on the terrace. At other times, or if you fancy a stroll, there’s a couple of restaurants a few minutes’ amble from the site. Venture out from your rural idyll and you’re within easy reach of walks, watersports and horse riding in the Cévennes National Park, and there are caves, castles and gardens to explore too.

Local attractions

Max out on your fresh-air setting by heading out into the Cévennes National Park for walks (gentle strolls or mountain clambers as you wish) or bike rides – have a chat with your hosts for guidance on suitable routes. Fishing folks can take their rods down to the Gardon river, which flows just past the site, and riders can saddle up at a stables five kilometres away. A watersports centre a half-hour walk away can hook you up with gentle days of canoeing or paddleboarding, or more pulse-raising activities like canyoning or climbing. The Alès Cévennes motor circuit is 20 minutes away by car for motorbike and go-kart racing. Other days out to consider locally might include the Grotte de Trabuc, the hilltop Château de Portes, the camellia gardens in Alès and the exotic Bambouseraie gardens – all are within a 40-minute drive of the site.
