  • Family-friendly site in La Grande-Motte, 10 minutes’ walk from beaches
  • Half an hour’s drive from Montpellier with an aquarium and zoo
  • Swimming pool, playground, sports and shop selling fresh bread on site
When it comes to seaside resorts, La Grande-Motte is nicely equipped, with fine sandy beaches, watersports aplenty and a busy marina worthy of a wander. It’s also here that you’ll find the family-friendly Camping Maïana Resort. A mere 10-minute stroll from the Hérault beaches and within easy reach of bars, restaurants and shops, there’s also plenty on site to fill your days here – so much so that you needn’t even venture out if you don’t fancy it. The pool scene is a winner, with a couple of outdoor numbers – including one geared up for kid-friendly splashes – and some waterslides. There’s also a playground for the nippers and, during high season, the kids’ club keeps them busy with games and activities. The rest of the gang can join in with energetic things like aqua gym, table tennis and sports in the playing area. Save some energy for later in the day, as there’s stuff going on in the evenings, too. You can stay put for eats as well; the on-site restaurant rustles up tasty lunches and dinners, and restless folk can take grub away for on-the-go bites. The shop, meanwhile, takes care of warm bread and pastries for the mornings… because who doesn’t love scoffing some fresh bread when they wake up?

Local attractions

If you like seeing the sights while on your hols, make your way to Montpellier (half an hour’s drive) for the day. The Cathedrale St-Pierre, Porte du Peyrou arch and Château de Flaugergues are some of the city’s popular landmarks, while the Musée Fabre houses a collection of paintings, ceramics and sculptures worthy of a mosey around. Montpellier’s Zoological Park and Planet Ocean World aquarium are good shouts for animal encounters, and a bit closer to base there’s another aquarium, Seaquarium (15 minutes). Continue animal experiences with flamingo spotting in the Ornithological Park of Pont de Gau and Camargue Regional Nature Park (35 minutes), also a top spot for outdoorsy explores on foot or by bike. For visits heavy on Roman history, there are a couple of choices. Nîmes (50 minutes) is known for its well-preserved Roman monuments, particularly the Arena of Nîmes amphitheatre. There’s another amphitheatre over in Arles (an hour), which is also famed for inspiring the paintings of Van Gogh. For that reason, a stop at the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh art museum is also a fine choice if you're heading to Arles.
