Views over the pretty Pérols Lake? Tick. Vast vineyards within a short drive? Tick. Family-friendly amenities like heated pools, a multi-flume waterslide and a pétanque court? Tick, tick and tick… As well as all of the above, the 33-hectare Camping Le Lac des Rêves, set in a protected nature reserve of the Languedoc-Roussillon’s Camargue region, is just half an hour from the centre of Montpellier for city slicking (and just 10 minutes’ drive from its airport). After some time at the beach? The coast is approximately 15 minutes away by car, but if you’d rather sit by the water nearer your pitch, plonk yourself down at the restaurant terrace overlooking the site’s waterpark and Pérols lake. When you’ve got some get-up-and-go in you, all sorts of sports are on offer, including yoga, volleyball, miniature golf, pétanque, tennis and table tennis. Cycle paths are close by as well and bike hire is available at the park. To loosen those muscles after stretching the legs, leave the tiddlers at the kids’ club – there are groups for 1 to 4-year-olds, 5 to 9-year-olds and 10 to 14-year-olds – before swinging by the sauna and hammam. A hairdresser is on hand as well to get you looking even lovelier than usual ahead of the nightly shows (held during high season)…

Local attractions

It’ll take you quite some time to get through the activities on site, but if you’re here for a while and more entertainment’s needed, potter towards Parcenthèse leisure park (10 minutes’ drive) for the outdoor laser tag. Pondering a break on the beach instead? Carnon-Plage and Palavas-les-Flots (10 and 15 minutes) are both within easy reach – head to the latter for watersports galore. For a different type of thrill, go to La Grande-Motte (20 minutes) in the hopes of winning big at the casino (fingers crossed) or keep things more on the low-key side of things with a tour of Montpellier (30 minutes). There’s an aquarium with penguins, a free zoo, a botanical garden and an orangery here. Call in at the cathedral too, then set off to Aigues-Mortes (25 minutes) for more historical sights – this medieval walled town is full of well-preserved architecture. Afterwards, stroll around the newer buildings of Sète (35 minutes), a sprawling port city edged by the Étang de Thau saltwater lagoon, before climbing up to Mont St Clair for views across the network of canals in this settlement known as ‘the Venice of Languedoc’.
