  • Scenic site in the Haut Languedoc Regional Natural Park
  • A 10-minute walk from Gorges d'Heric and outdoor activity centres
  • Solar-heated amenities block, pétanque court and communal barbecues
How splendid is the Hérault scenery around Camping du Caroux? Well, it’s très splendid indeed – for this is a site in the Haut Languedoc Regional Natural Park, a five-minute stroll from both the Jaur river and the Gorges d’Heric. With all this comes plenty of scope for alfresco activity: hikes, mountain bike rides, donkey rides, climbing, canyoning and canoeing can all be sorted in the surrounds, and there’s also a somewhat unusual chance to get deep into the river by donning scuba kit. Panic not if you were hoping for rather more relaxing times: the spa town of Lamalou-les-Bains is a 20-minute drive away, and there are beach days around an hour away at Agde or Valras-Plage. If you’ve become a little weary after all the adventures all around, it’s comforting to note that eats can be easily acquired at the shops or restaurants 10 minutes’ walk away in Mons la Trivalle village. Guests planning self-catering evenings can use a couple of barbecue areas at the site. In an eco-friendly nod to preserving the surrounds, the site’s well-maintained amenities block is powered by solar energy, staving off any chills and providing plenty of hot water for the showers and washing-up area.

Local attractions

Because of its particularly pretty setting, Mons la Trivalle is something of a hub for outdoor escapades: activity centres a few minutes’ walk from the site can sort days of canyoning, climbing, caving, guided hikes or scuba dives in the river. If you’d prefer to go at your own pace, stroll over to the banks of the Orb river (20 minutes’ walk) instead to hire canoes or kayaks, or set out for a walk or bike ride on the disused railway line that runs from the village. The Gorges d’Heric are 10 minutes’ walk away if you’d like to take a wander up there. An outing to the coast is a fine idea too – it’s a drive of around an hour to the sandy stretches at Agde and Valras-Plage; perhaps take a detour en route to fuss over the furry beasts at Mini Zoo Farm (35 minutes), soak up the atmosphere at Fontcaude Abbey (40 minutes) or take a wander around medieval Béziers (50 minutes). There are several wineries along the drive too, should you fancy picking up a bottle to accompany your evening on site.
