  • Family-run site in the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Nature Park
  • Close to 7 ski resorts including Font-Romeu; lots of outdoorsy options
  • Outdoor pool with wave machines, waterslides and Jacuzzi next door
A full quota of seven winter sports resorts – including the famed Font-Romeu – lie around the jaw-droppingly spectacular locale of Las Closas, a few minutes' walk from the village of Err high up in the Catalan Pyrenees Regional Nature Park. This peaceful and family-run place lies 1,350 metres above sea level, in a pristine and highly serene leafy two hectares of land bordering France and Spain. Adjacent to the park is the settlement’s waterpark, well set up for family days with pools, a wave machine, waterslides and a Jacuzzi. Outdoor activities including climbing, hiking and paragliding are available all year round in the surroundings; as winter draws in, the area becomes a winter sports haven, with skiing and snowboarding trails around the seven stations of Les Neiges Catalanes, and all-ability cross-country skiing and traditional pistes around Espace Nordique du Capcir. If you quite like the idea of a less speedy snow sport, then snowshoeing and dog sledding are top options too. Several eateries are within easy reach around the vicinity, or you could opt for a self-catered stay by picking up locally produced supplies like charcuterie meats, cheeses, honey and fruit and veg at the local grocery shop, or fresh meat and poultry from the nearby village butcher for barbecue sizzles. Other facilities on site include free wifi, a games room and a ping pong table. There's also a grassy play area for kids to expend excess energy at, perhaps while you settle back in the Jacuzzi and drink up more of these cracking mountain views.

Local attractions

The local valleys, lakes and peaks – some of which reach a lofty 3,000 metres above sea level – are a paradise for outdoorsy sorts of all persuasions: days upon days could well be spent out exploring along hiking and mountain biking trails that lie around the immediate vicinity, and if you’re a fan of hoofing it around, you can also tour from atop a horse. The landscape lends itself well to other activities, like scrambling up via ferrata climbing routes, canyoning and fishing in lakes and waterways, golfing and – for brave adrenaline junkies – paragliding high up; just ask the friendly Las Closas team to point you toward their fave local spots. For rather more sedate days, the Eyne Valley is especially good for wildlife watchers, or after days spent out and about during summer or winter, melt all your muscle aches away in the soothing waters of the sulphurous baths at Llo, within five kilometres, or at Dorres and Saint Thomas, both within 35 minutes’ drive.
