  • Family-run site in the grounds of a former 18th-century summer school
  • Half an hour's drive from UNESCO-listed Aubusson
  • Two heated pools, plus slow and shallow mill stream for safe splashing
Who knew that Parisian schoolkids had it so good back in the 18th century? Set on a former colonie des vacances (aka summer school) across a pristinely green seven and a half-hectare property, the characterful Moulin des Jarasses three kilometres from the village of Le Compas has not only its own forest and mill stream, but also two 200 year old watermills, a traditional mill house and a lush little tea garden to boot. Since 2010, hosts Judith and Andries have skilfully transformed Jarasses into a cosy glamping site with first-rate facilities, on a peaceful setting with two pools and a poolside sun terrace at guests' disposal. The little La Noisette river runs through the site too, and the shallow mill stream provides a safe paddling area for young kids; there's also plenty of green space for the offspring to run about in too, or they could take their energetic selves along to the animal field or the woodland nature-spotting trails. Jarasses also has a spectacular little tea garden and terrace for you unwind at and to have lunch and snacks. You can also join Judith and Andries for a table d'hôte meal at dinner time, where you’ll share a set menu of traditional French dishes accompanied by a drop of local wine. When the evenings are a little fresher, your hosts will kindly fire up the woodburning stove on the verandah and share a wine or two with you.

Local attractions

The Creuse valley is known for being a particularly pristine part of France, filled with forests, lakes and villages hosting popular antique and farmers' markets, such as that of Felletin around half an hour's drive away. The valley is crossed by more than 2,500 kilometres of marked hiking and cycling trails if you're up for a day's adventuring (often without meeting another soul), and paragliding, canoeing, fishing and other outdoorsy pursuits are available in the immediate area around Moulin des Jarasses – just ask Andries and Judith about their favourite spots. History and tapestry fans should make for the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aubusson city, to see medieval tapestries and visit some of the many tapestry studios all over the city. Also in Aubusson is an indoor pool complex with waterslides, a paddling pool, a sauna, a spa and a hammam – so when the kids (or you) tire of all the history this city has to give, you can head there for a dip and a relaxing sit in the steam room.
