  • Terraced lakeside site with views of Lac de St Hélène from every pitch
  • A 20-minute drive from Eymoutiers and 40 minutes from Limoges
  • Canoe and pedalo hire; fresh bread and pastry daily during high season
For hols full of watersports, lake swims and fishing (plus lots else) park up for stays at Camping du Lac de Bujaleuf, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the Haute-Vienne village of Bujaleuf, Limousin. In Millevaches en Limousin Regional Natural Park, and on the shores of Lac de St Hélène, this is quite the scenic spot. The site is terraced, so each pitch has uninterrupted views over the water and it’s an easy stroll down to its edge. St Hélène is less lake, more wide bit of the river Maulde, so it’s fed with a constant supply of fresh water – this makes swims from the nearby beach (about 10 minutes’ walk), as well as outings in the canoes and pedalos rentable on site, much more pleasurable. As well as being a top spot for swimming and splashing about, the site is well placed for casting a line, with numerous fishing areas within easy reach. In keeping with that kind of slower-paced day, take advantage of proximity to five hiking trails – through the forest and along the lakeshore – to stretch legs (both human and canine). Once appetites are worked up, pick some veggies in the on-site vegetable garden, hunt for some fresh eggs laid by the site’s chickens, and (during high season) make the most of the fresh bread and croissants delivered daily to whip something together.

Local attractions

Guests can get out on the water right from site, but if feeling sand between toes is a necessity it’s just 10 minutes’ walk to a nearby beach on Lac de St Hélène for swims (supervised during high season), watersports, play equipment and a restaurant. Slightly further afield, explores of traditional urban spots are recommended at the scenic Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat (20 minutes) for its stunning architecture and riverside houses – and for its position on the Santiago de Compostela trail – and at the small medieval town of Eymoutiers (20 minutes). When bigger city days beckon, head to Limoges (40 minutes), where visitors can tread carefully in the national porcelain museum, stroll about the botanical garden, visit the cathedral and aquarium, and do a whole lot of shopping. More nature-filled days can be opted for instead, of course… Treetop courses and more watersports can be had at Lac de Vassivière (30 minutes), and afternoons among the animals are within reach at La Cité des Insectes (30 minutes) and Parc Zoo Reynou (35 minutes).
