  • Midi Pyrénées site near the Mas d'Azil caves
  • Five-hectare camping area among a 20-hectare site
  • Kids' club, pool, play area, restaurant and bar
You'll find rather a lot to do at Domaine du Bourdieu near Durfort in the Ariege department. Based on a former farm spanning 20 hectares with a five-hectare camping area, this family-friendly campsite has heaps of offer for all ages, from sporty activities suited to all sizes to the summer kids' club running treasure hunts, painting, circus skills, sports, pastry cooking and more to keep small sorts entertained. The campsite has a big pool, a mini golf course, a pétanque court, a football table and a well-equipped playground with trampoline. And if any of this sounds just too energetic for a lazy la France hol, wander over to the restaurant for a la carte dishes or drinks and ice cream at the snack bar, or pick up some freshly baked bread and pastries to disappear off into the site's green spaces. Facilities include showers and toilets, a launderette, a free wifi spot and a washing-up area. Barbecues are available for hire and there's a food shop.

Local attractions

The Domaine du Bourdieu team most correctly points out that the local Mas d'Azil caves are a must-see, not least because they're the only caves in all of Europe that are able to be passed through by car. The caves' Prehistory Museum a kilometre way in the village tells their caverny tale over three floors, via displays of the weapons, tools and furniture of those who lived there. A few kilometres from the caves is the Xploria science park, also telling the tale of the region's prehistoric times through fossils, wooden walkways, botanical areas and life-size models of animals now extinct. Workshops and family events are also regularly held. A good local option for arty sorts is the collection of galleries and studios open for visits at the nearby village of Carla Bayle, next to the woodland and treetop adventure trails among giant specimens at Sequoia Vertigo. And if you're here with the kids, check out the astronomy-related activities for all ages at the observatory of Sabarat. Other top picks are the underground river of Labouiche (much recommended) as well as the Chateau de Foix (same) – if you're thirsting for yet more ideas, ask at the Domaine du Bourdieu reception where the friendly team will be happy to help.
