Small sorts suspicious of eating anything green? They may change their minds with a stay at Camping de Montmaurin, for the friendly folk here have set up a veg patch in which guests are welcome to pluck fresh produce to serve up with their alfresco feasts (and if the kids still don't approve, well, that's all the more for you). The veg patch is just one small part of this six-hectare Haute-Garonne site a few minutes’ walk from the petite village of Montmaurin and a little over an hour’s drive from Toulouse. Also around the place are a small outdoor pool, free wifi, a playground and all the kit you’ll need for games of pétanque, table tennis and table football. And you’ll be sharing some of the space with the small gang of farm animals (including goats and pigs). As the site is surrounded by forest, you’re also well sorted for plenty of cool spots in which to relax, including a bar with shaded outdoor terrace. If you’re up for outdoor cookery you’re welcome to set up a barbecue; there’s a small shop on site where you can pick up the necessaries. Fishing, watersports and plenty of walks and bike rides are all nearby for folk who fancy a bit more fresh air activity, and there’s a larger swimming pool (open in summer) and tennis court a short walk away in the village.

Local attractions

If you like to roam on foot or by bike, there’s plenty of choice of places to head for nearby – wander your way through around 100 hectares of forest, or take a 10-minute drive to ramble around the scenic lakes and waterfalls of the Gorges de la Save. Those who’d rather be in or on the water can head to Lac de Montrejeau (25 minutes’ drive) to swim from the little beach, or drive to La Demi-Lune leisure park (25 minutes) to rent pedal boats or barrel across the water in a giant plastic bubble. There’s a toboggan run, miniature golf course, trampoline park and pony rides here too if you’d rather stick to dry land. Brush up on your French history with a trip to Montmaurin’s Gallo-Roman Villa (five minutes’ drive), and your prehistory by perusing the ancient exhibits at the museum in Aurignac (25 minutes). There’s much to see on the historic and cultural fronts in Toulouse (an hour and 15 minutes), or you could bring things right up to date with a visit to the high-tech Cité de l’Espace space museum.
