  • Safari tent stays in a scenic valley and riverside setting
  • A few minutes' walk from the medieval village of Caylus
  • Restaurant with daily menus; playground, and pool with adjacent bar
Safari tent stays in spectacular surrounds are the boxes to be ticked at Vodatent at Camping de la Bonnette in the south of France, among hills and valleys half a kilometre from the Tarn-et-Garonne medieval village of Caylus. All ages are fully catered for here: the handsome outdoor pool has a shallow as well as a deep end so small sorts can splash safely, and is handily next to the bar so grownups can dry off with a coffee or tipple while keeping an eye on their offspring. Safe dips and paddling can also be had in the Bonnette river running alongside the site; around the grounds, there's a play area and a trampoline for kids to bounce around at, and table tennis, bowling and volleyball court for peaceful – or otherwise – family games. All safari tents come with their own mini kitchen, which – fab little touch – can be wheeled outdoors for prepping eats under the southern French sun. A restaurant with daily menus is on site if this is too much faff, and a communal barbecue night is held once a week. To source bits for your own barbie, the shops and market of Caylus are 600 metres away. No need to pick up croissants while in town though: the village baker calls to the site every morning to deliver them freshly baked.

Local attractions

Pick up a map at reception to set off on one of the marked hiking trails close by, or ask the team for details of the cycling and hiking tours you can take from the site. Canoeing, fishing and horse riding are also available nearby, and climbing, caving and many more hikes to the north in the Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park. Medieval Caylus a short wander away has handsome countryside views from the top of its hilltop setting; look out for the House of Wolves along the way. A small lake and a free museum on the local wildlife is on the edge of the village for a restful time afterwards. Town days include another medieval hilltop settlement at Najac, 25 minutes away, and the riverside medieval town Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val (10 minutes away, and a bit of a must-see). Toulouse is just under an hour and a half away.
