  • Quiet and splendidly rural site on the banks of the Agout river
  • Hiking, cycling, fishing and kayaking all available minutes away
  • Bar-restaurant, playground and picnic area with communal barbecue
Oh-so-splendid and peaceful is this riverside spot in Vabre in south-west France’s Languedoc-Roussillon region: countryside days of all sorts are available here, with horse riding, fishing, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking and off-road 4x4 tours being just a small slice of what’s around for you to do in the site’s vicinity – and that’s without even thinking about exploring the local settlements. All about angling? Be sure to take your tackle with you when coming on a holiday here, for all along the site’s riverside border you can fish in the Agout’s second-category waters. And besides hanging out in hope of landing a catch, there’s plenty to keep you amused down by the river: take a book to sit peacefully on the riverbank, or don your swimming togs for a paddle if feeling active. Not far from the site you can set off on a horseback ride, or if you’d prefer to tour the locale on two wheels, plenty of trails for that are around as well. Otherwise, stick traditionally to your own two feet and embark on a hiking adventure along the GR 36, which passes right by the property. Spread across three lush hectares of semi-wild parkland, the site has a play area should all those oodles of outdoor space not quite cut it (doubtful); also to be found on an amble around the site is a picnic area with a communal barbecue; and if you haven’t brought your own barbecue bits and pieces, then you can rely on the site to sell you charcoal and barbecue packs to sizzle your dins with. After a hard day’s activity-doing, settle back at the site’s licensed restaurant for a Belgian beer (or three?), and peruse the menu for some time before choosing that takes your fancy: goulash, burgers, salads and more are all served up here, and all at a reasonable price too. The site’s multilingual team is a friendly one, and they will be more than enthused to help you plan your days of getting properly stuck into all the country-style activities around to make the most of a holiday among their local lands.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Shady grassed area along river. Burbling river aids sleep. Helpful owners, keen to make a go of their new venture.

Disliked: Not really a dislike but be aware wiggly windy road to campsite if wary of that kind of driving.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: We loved everything about this amazing site! The owners are brilliant, approachable and very friendly. The countryside around the campsite is beautiful, and there are so many wild swimming spots - including a river right next to the campsite! It is a lovely place to disconnect and relax because there is no WIFI. If you want to go hiking then this place is great for that too - there are lots of trails a short car ride away. The town Vabre has a small convenience store and when we were there, there was a Vide Grenier which was very nice. The vibe of this camping is perfect because everyone is so nice and friendly - my friends and I will definitely be going again!

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Interesting route to get there if you come in the rear entrance down the mountain! Friendly welcoming hosts. Some work still in progress but site looks really good. Peaceful and remote located in forest. No wifi (or radio or TV) due to location but 4G can be used if needed. The location made up for it. Very quiet when I was there. Other activities looked good but did not have time to try out. I can see Scout/ Guide or other outdoor groups having a good time there or as a good base for activities

Disliked: Nothing

Local attractions

As Camping Le Bois Flottant is bordered by the peaceful waters of the Agout river, fishing and wild swimming are available right from the site. Also splendidly, the GR 36 hiking trail passes right by, so hiking out into the beaut surrounds is an easy alfresco activity here too; other lovely hiking trails in the locale include La Peyro Clabado, Cascade du Saut de la Truite, the Salas and La Ronda del Peiraire: ask the friendly site team about where you can join all the local walks. While staying around these parts, say the site team, it’s an absolute must that you make a trip over to the forest-covered mountains of Sidobre, for this hilly and wooded area’s granite lands are magnifiquely dotted with huge boulders and standing stones, rocky waterways, crashing cascades and sparkling lakes and natural pools. Around 20 minutes’ drive away from base, this area is a topping spot for outdoorsy days of all flavours, from hiking, cycling and mountain biking to wildlife spotting, kayaking, whitewater rafting and 4x4 tours. Days spent around historic local settlements can also be accessed with ease around here, around villages like Brassac, known for its two-arch bridge and 12th-century castle, or Lacrouzette and its Notre-Dame du Granit church. Also tiptop for a trip to is Saint-Salvy-de-la-Balme, to walk among the huge granite boulders and to see its trompe-l’œil wall and the town hall’s spectacular façade.
