The promise of a seafront setting is right there in the name here, and as beachfront locations go, the family-friendly Camping du Bord de Mer is a cracker. Guests need only trot across the road to hit the sands and sea a mere 20 metres away. There’s plenty of space on the beach for paddling and sunbathing, and a little further along there’s a sailing centre that offers instruction and kit hire for sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, paddleboarding and other watersports. If the sea seems a little chilly, stick around at this Loire-Atlantique site to swim in the covered heated pool – also the place to head for aqua gym, aqua zumba classes and the weekly sessions of kids’ pool games. Prefer to stay dry? Wander instead to the pétanque court (with sea views), playground, ping pong table or multi-purpose room, or sign up for a massage in the on-site parlour. When hunger strikes, the on-site snack bar, takeaway service and communal barbecue area should sort such situations, and the restaurants and shops of Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef are within walking distance so supplies won’t be hard to track down. Guests can also order breakfast basket deliveries to start days off on the right foot. Evenings during high season can be spent gathering with fellow guests for on-site entertainment, which includes everything from karaoke nights and dance parties to sociable aperitif gatherings and family-friendly theme nights.

Local attractions

Seafront explores are a cinch, with the long-distance Vélodyssée path (1,200 kilometres of French coastal cycling) running by the site and lots else to keep those sticking closer to base entertained. Chief among these should be a trip to Guérande (35 minutes’ drive) to clamber over 15th-century walls, sample local eats at some highly rated restaurants and take a tour of the town’s famed salt marshes. Tastes for the salt lifestyle teased by Guérande? Head to Batz-sur-Mer (40 minutes) to tour the salt marsh museum, then stick about in the past with days spent diving into French history at Kerhinet Historic Village (40 minutes) and Parc de Préhistoire de Bretagne (an hour and 15 minutes). For peaceful days gadding about in nature, there’s plenty to choose from. It’s just 35 minutes from base to boat trips through Brière Natural Regional Park and 40 minutes to safari-style days at Planète Sauvage. Further afield are trips to see the 2,000-plus beasties at the Océarium du Croisic (50 minutes) and afternoons at Branféré zoo (an hour). When city days beckon, a 15-minute drive will land guests in Pornic to explore the old port and tons of seafood restaurants, and it’s an hour to châteaux, cathedral, botanical gardens and giant mechanical animals in Nantes.
