Who’s up for a fab family break packed with beach time, bike rides and brill days out? Scoop up your small sorts and head for a seaside stay at Camping La Prévoté, a pleasingly friendly and spacious place in Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez. From here it’s a 20-minute stroll or few minutes’ bike ride to several kilometres of sandy beach for chilling out or getting active with watersports and games. Bikes can be hired on site to pedal through the surrounding woodland and wetlands, down to the resort facilities of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez and Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, or along the coastal Vélodyssée cycle path. Keeping the kids amused around here is a cinch: as well as that splendid beach, there are days out galore nearby, including a waterpark, a safari park and an amusement park. Loafing around on site is equally appealing too, with a playground, table tennis, bouncy castle, swimming pool and paddling pool to help you while away the hours. A snack bar is on hand to provide drinks, ice creams, takeaway pizzas and meals (with plenty of familiar options for picky eaters). In summer, swing by for additional activities including the popular Wednesday night moules-frites feast.

Local attractions

Bring your bikes or hire on site, for there’s much to see on two wheels around here: short jaunts through the surrounding woods, perhaps, or longer stretches of the Vélodyssée cycle path (the 1,200-kilometre route runs along the entire length of France’s Atlantic coast). The bike-friendly islands of Île d’Yeu and Noirmoutier are both easily accessed from here too. You can use those bikes to get to the beach, or take a 20-minute woodland walk to hit the sands. The waters here are great for swimming, surfing, windsurfing and jetskiing, and there are sailing, surf and kayak lessons to be had for those who need a few tips on technique. Days out nearby include the prehistory-themed Dino’s Park, zooming down the waterslides at Atlantic Toboggan and rides and games at Parc des Dunes; all are within half an hour’s drive. The safari trail, bush walk and dolphin shows of Planète Sauvage are around a 45-minute drive away.

Liked: The size of the campsite was ideal. It was not too big and quiet just what we wanted. Caravan was kept well and clean. Great amenities for young children i.e. play park, bouncy pirate ship and small pool. It was a great location where it was near the beach and within easy access of local towns. The owners of the campsite where very helpful if we needed anything.
