As it's by the Vendée coast, you might be smartly sussing that Camping Le Domaine des Pins is close to pine forest as well as sands. And how rightly clever you'd be, for this family-friendly place is right in the pine woodland that characterises this chunk of French coast almost as much as its fine golden beaches. As the Vendée's also famed for its thousands of kilometres of cycling paths, you might – correctly – surmise that beach, forest and biking are all linked here too. Oui: from Camping Le Domaine des Pins you can hire a bike to cruise through the forest on several bike paths to your nearest sands, those of La Parée Preneau, an easy kilometre away. (Oui, part of the spectacular sands of the famed seaside resort of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez.) Domaine des Pins is well set up to keep all ages busy: there's a huge (pics time please) outdoor pool as well as an indoor heated one with Jacuzzi to keep you nicely dipped and bubbled – all the better while the juniors are off being entertained at the summer kids' club or whizzing around/up the playground with climbing wall. A games room and pétanque also await for your leisurely pleasure, as well as regular entertainment on summer eves. Eats are a cinch to sort at Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez, four kilometres away, or on site with the assistance of the site bread service, for picnics at the beach or around the many communal and green spaces on the grounds. As befits such a handily set up site, there's a bar-restaurant at your foodie disposal too.

Local attractions

Sands and cycling and tall pine trees… what an excellently placed site this is. Local beach La Parée Preneau, part of the beaches of Saint-Hilaire-de-Riez, is a wide and sandy expanse edged by dunes which in turn are bordered by the forest of the Pays de Monts. Cycling, hiking and horse riding are all available around the forest and coast: ask on site for details or book excursions via the tourist office in Saint-Hilaire. More active days out include ziplines and climbing at Feeling Forest Leisure Park, bowling and paintballing, or learning the ropes at sailing, all available at Saint-Hilaire. You should also venture towards more Vendée beaches and pine forest at Saint Gilles Croix de Vie and Saint-Jean-de-Monts, 10 and 15 minutes' drive away.
