  • Vendée-based site with lifeguarded pool complex
  • Spectacular sandy beaches and the island of Noirmoutier nearby
  • Use the leisure and sauna facilities of sister site across the road
If the setting of Le Bois Dormant a short drive from the superb sandy beaches of the Vendée and the seaside town of St-Jean-de-Monts just isn't watery enough for you, you should also be chuffed to hear that a watery lot of stuff is on site too. For here you'll find a heated and fully lifeguarded outdoor pool complex to suit all sorts: it has a pool and waterslides, a toddlers' splash pool and – mon Dieu – even a spa bath. Do you need a break from all that strenuous swimming and spa-ing? Toddle over to the roomy on-site restaurant to have a well-earned break. Le Bois Dormant is just over the road from its sister site Le Bois Masson, and guests can use the facilities at both. Among the many other things to do are lounging around the health and wellbeing centre with massage, sauna and reflexology (at Le Bois Masson), letting loose at the three free kids' clubs or on the multisports pitch for football and basketball, or jazzing it up at the free evening family entertainment. Bike hire is available on site too. There are also – mon Dieu – pool tables, table tennis, a video games room, weekly craft markets, boules and an outdoor play area. Need some tipples or vittles? The site has the Vanilla Café with poolside terrace and snacks, and a bar for drinks, romantic evenings, relaxed evening entertainment and keeping up to date with sporty stuff on its big satellite TV. Takeaway is available on site and free gas barbecues are to hand if you'd rather sort out your own nosh. Le Bois Dormant also has a small supermarket, a bureau de change, an information bureau, a launderette and safety deposit boxes.

Local attractions

The Le Bois Dormant owners reckon that the beaut sandy beaches of St Jean-de-Monts are among the most beaut in all of France (we know that's saying summat): head here for boat trips, sailing, windsurfing, fishing and jetskiing on their waters as well as horse riding, go-karting and cycling around their coast. And the site owners say that the the Saturday morning market and superb local produce a few kilometres from town shouldn't be missed either. .. Nearby St Gilles-Croix-de-Vie is famed for its fresh sardines and so of course these should most certainly be sampled, along with the vintage tinned sardines millésimées available to buy (bring some home; they're a mighty purty souvenir). The Maison du Pêcheur museum, a former fishermen’s cottage, is a big hit with kids who visit the area, even those who won't sample their sardines. (Le tsk.) Also famed in the region is le petite island of Noirmoutier about 45km away, with its beach bathing huts of the vintage variety, its long stretches of sand (Bois de La Chaize is mighty pretty), its seventh century monastery ruins and its splashtastic Oceanile waterpark. About half an hour's drive away is the old village of Apremont, another beaut spot in the region and with another beaut sandy beach as well as a medieval castle and a big lake where adventurers can hire pedalos, flat-bottomed boats and canoes. Et afterwards? Work off one's appetite at the bar and restaurant with spectacular lake views.
