  • Large pitches at a 200-hectare estate near Saint-Julien-des-Landes
  • A 15-minute drive to the Vendée beaches; 55 minutes to Puy du Fou
  • Pool complex, lagoon beach, restaurant and lots of activities on site
Seeking some space to relax? You’ll certainly have plenty of that at Camping La Garangeoire – this Vendée site is part of a 200-hectare estate five minutes’ drive from Saint-Julien-des-Landes, with a rather magnificent historic house at its centre. The large size of the site means plenty of space to spread out on all the pitches, and it also means plenty of facilities for guests. The estate has been welcoming guests since way back in 1964, and in the intervening years the owners have continued to add more and more extras so they can now boast pretty much everything you’d want from a holiday location. On the entertainment front, that means a heated outdoor pool complex (with slides, a paddling pool and various activities including water polo and night swims), a sauna and massage room, two tennis courts, a football pitch, miniature golf, playgrounds, fishing ponds, an outdoor fitness area and trampolines. And that’s not all… there are also daily activities for kids and adults alike (including archery sessions, yoga and football training), plus bike hire, pedal go-kart hire, nature walks and a horse riding centre for kids’ pony rides, adult lessons and trail rides in the forest. And even that’s not all… because you’ll probably also want to leave some time for the beach area, which has a lovely lagoon that goes to a maximum depth of 90cm and is just the place for taking the kids for a safe paddle or swim. Meanwhile, when it comes to the essentials, there are plenty of those around too: the site has a restaurant, bar, wine bar, takeaway, supermarket, launderettes, electric vehicle charging… and a reception area with friendly staff who can help sort anything not on the list.

Castel fully-serviced grass pitch (premium)

Liked: Big pitches, a good mix of quiet areas plus lots to do for the kids Excellent food in the restaurant Lots of shade under the trees

Disliked: All the trees meant no satellite signal on our pitch. Unfortunately poor phone signal at the pitch so could not use data reliably.

Fully-serviced grass pitch (comfort)

Liked: The ease of booking. The pitch size and the convenience of it being 'fully serviced'. The staff were all friendly and helpful all of the time. Kids club was great! The site is not far from the amazing beaches where the kids explored the rock pools and we all swam in the ocean. The site was spotlessly clean all of the time and after 7 nights we still haven't done all of the available activities, so we'll be going back... for longer next time! Thanks everyone x

Disliked: Can't think of anything

Electric grass pitch

Liked: This is a very clean site. They don’t close the toilets when cleaning them either, which is a bonus. The facilities were great and they had activities for adults too. Lovely restaurant, staff and overall site.

Disliked: Lack of Wi-Fi at the pitches and 1x water tap for aprox 10 pitches.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Great size pitches, loads of activities throughout the day/evening, shop on site with reasonable prices, very child friendly, staff very friendly…lives up to the 5 star rating!

Disliked: Would like to perhaps be closer to other places to visit (walkable), albeit we were aware when booking and enough to do for all for the week onsite, really not an issue but just hindsite!

Liked: Beautiful place 😁 Everyone friendly and helpful. Great pool, bar, food and facilities. The lagoon pool was lovely too. Huge pitches which makes a nice change. Fully-serviced grass pitch (comfort)

Liked: Extremely well-maintained campsite. So many staff everywhere to keep it clean and tidy and assist guests. Spacious, private pitches. Range of entertainment options that you could join or not as you pleased and weren't too noisy or intrusive. Heated pool and waterslides. Take away staff very efficient. Lovely lake with pedalos. Walking trails. Quiet at night.

Disliked: Personally the site was a little too busy for me.

Stabilised electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Everything. Fabulous site. Has more lovely clean washrooms and toilets than any other site we have stayed at. Has several bars and a restaurant and take away which has lovely fish and chips. We had a really large quiet pitch which I was amazed at as there were so many kids around.

Disliked: Needs another pool. Too many people there. Didn’t even get a dip. Just too crowded.

Local attractions

If you’re coming to the Vendée it’s likely that you’d like to spend some time at the beach. The easiest way to do that is to hop on the shuttle bus that runs to local beaches once a week in summer. If you’d rather travel under your own steam, it’s a 15-minute drive to Bretignolles-sur-Mer, or just under half an hour to Saint Gilles Croix de Vie or Les Sables d’Olonne. There are plenty of activities to try over at the beaches – and in the local area too. There’s a circuit of five golf courses around the park, plus go-karting at Circuit Mecamax (20 minutes’ drive), walks and bike rides at Lac de Jaunay (10 minutes) and aerial adventures at Le Grand Défi (five minutes). If you’re after a full-on family day out, plan a trip to Puy du Fou (55 minutes) – the history-inspired theme park is packed with rides, activities and shows so you’ll easily fill a day there with the kids.
