Belle by name, belle by nature… Cabanes de la Belle is indeed a pretty place, in the grounds of a 19th-century mansion in the Poitou-Charentes area, just outside the little town of Magné and five minutes’ drive from the shops and restaurants of Gençay. As seems fitting for such a posh pad, the grounds here are rather special: the 12-hectare site is made up of woodlands and hills, with lots of trails to wander along, a flower garden and an adventure playground for the kids to do a bit of clambering. And the glamping units that have been scattered around are fittingly fab too: characterful wooden units that are properly in keeping with their surroundings. To minimise the eco impact these are off-grid units with dry toilets, and to max out the nature-filled vibe each one also has an outdoor deck with seating for hours spent taking in your splendid woodland surrounds. That outdoor deck is also a prime spot for a meal or drink; breakfast baskets, meal baskets and drinks can all be delivered to your door by site staff if you book a few days ahead. There’s also the option of sorting a meal at the site’s Finnish kota grill (with all the kit, food and instructions provided) if you’ve got at least four people in your group. If you’re not planning to spend your entire break hanging out among the trees (although that does seem rather tempting…) this is also a handy base for outings to Poitiers, Futuroscope and several animal parks.

Local attractions

You’ll certainly spot native wildlife flitting about while you’re on site, but if you fancy seeing something rather more exotic, take yourselves off to meet the monkeys at Vallée des Singes (20 minutes’ drive) or the snappy residents of La Planète des Crocodiles (25 minutes). Glimpses of the area’s past can be had with a wander around the ruins of medieval Château-Larcher (15 minutes) or an interactive outing to Le Cormenier history museum (20 minutes). Alternatively, take a view of what may yet be to come with a day trip to the excellent Futuroscope theme park (40 minutes). Poitiers (35 minutes) is another place worth checking out for a day of wandering its walking routes, gazing at its cathedral and strolling through pretty Parc de Blossac. If all that wandering leaves you a little overheated, cool off with a good old splash at Gliss-Up waterpark (15 minutes).
