  • Offbeat accommodation set in three hectares of forest
  • Easily accessed from the D907, 20 minutes from Digne
  • Adventurous, off-grid holidays in secluded natural surroundings
It’s all about simply slowing down and appreciating your stunning Alpes-de-Haute-Provence surrounds at Le Mas des Pins… this is a place where you can leave your workaday worries behind as you turn off the D907 and head off to your accommodation deep in a three-hectare forest of pine and oak trees. And what accommodation it is… friendly owner Corinne has set the site up to help guests fully appreciate the forest around them from characterful units in secluded spots around the grounds (some of them only accessible after a 10-minute walk through the trees). While comfortable and spacious, the units here don't have running water (jerrycans are provided), and most don't have electricity. It's a tradeoff, true, it’s worth sacrificing modern life for the simple pleasures on offer. Plus, being a fully-fledged member of the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux (Birds Protection League), you can expect to see and hear a lot of feathery creatures flitting among the branches. Kids also have a lot to help keep them chirpy at Le Mas des Pins – there’s a play area and sometimes tours of the grounds can be organised on one of the site's friendly ponies. Venturing out from your idyll, tiny hilltop village of Beynes is a 10-minute drive away; Mézel, where there's a convenience store and a local restaurant that serves only local ingredients, is five minutes away and bigger Digne (20 minutes) has a supermarket for those looking to stock up ahead of a proper rural retreat.

Local attractions

You may have properly immersed yourselves in forest existence on site, but there’s plenty more to explore on the nature front around here. If you’ve not managed a trip up into the treetops on site, sort out some time on the high ropes course at Arbre et Aventure En Pays Dignois (15 minutes’ drive). Back down at ground level, see what you can spot fluttering around at Digne Butterfly Garden (20 minutes). Those heading out to hike may like to stride forth in the Haute Provence Geopark (20 minutes) or around the Gorges de Trévans (25 minutes), while golfers in search of greens will find them at Golf de Digne-Les-Bains (15 minutes). Time to give the legs a rest? Learn about the local tipples at Musée de la Distillerie (20 minutes) or head to Lac de Sainte Croix beach (40 minutes) for swims, sunbathing and splendid views. Strolling around town is a good option too, if you aim for the gardens and spas of Digne (20 minutes) or the ceramics museum and clifftop chapel in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie (35 minutes).
