  • Peaceful site in the Alpilles Regional Natural Park
  • Half an hour's drive from Arles, 40 minutes from Avignon
  • Café on site, plus games of table tennis, pétanque and miniature golf
In the Alpilles Regional Natural Park and peppered with pine trees, Huttopia Camping Fontvieille is a properly peaceful place in which to spend your days. A gentle 20-minute amble brings you to the little town of Fontvieille for pottering around the shops, scoffing bistro meals or people watching from a café terrace, and the surrounding area reveals châteaux, a windmill and a Roman aqueduct, all within easy walking distance. Serenity seekers will encounter plenty of splendidly shaded spots under the trees on site for flopping down with a book (and maybe a glass of vino too if you’re into multitasking), perhaps rousing themselves occasionally for games of pétanque or table tennis, or to perfect their putt at the miniature golf course. There’s also a playground for les enfants, and a relaxation room where all are welcome to gather to flop in front of the TV. Kick your days off in fine style by ordering freshly baked bread and pastries to be delivered ready for your morning munching; later on the site’s café is on hand for snacks or to perk you up with a mid-afternoon coffee. If you need a hand to decide how to spend your days (the bits when you’re not relaxing under a tree, that is), have a chat with one of the friendly staff members, who have all the latest gen on various attractions and activities. A wifi connection across the site gives you further scope for regional research should you require. Wherever you chose to roam, upon return to site you can refresh with a free hot shower and rid your clobber of any accumulated muck at the launderette. Facilities at the toilet block are accessible for guests with reduced mobility.

Local attractions

Walks in the immediate vicinity of the site are ideally paced for those who favour casual rambles over hefty hikes. 15 minutes or so takes you to Château de Montauban, to wander around the 18th-century mansion and learn a little bit about Provençal history at the Fontvieille Stories exhibition. Mooch for a mere 10 minutes to reach the Ramet windmill, once home to the writer Alphonse Daudet and now fably restored for visitors to wander around. You can visit these two separately or follow a circular walk through the woods which takes in both. For more strenuous hikes, along with mountain bike trails, horse riding and climbing, you'll need to head a bit deeper into the Alpilles Regional Natural Park; site staff can advise on the best locations for these activities. Pop over to Les Baux-de-Provence, 20 minutes away, to wander around the fortified village and visit the château-fortress high up on a cliff overlooking the medieval streets. Just outside the village is Les Carrières de Lumières, an immersive art museum where the exhibits surround you as you wander and you may encounter a show along the way. Arles, 20 minutes from the site, is famed for its Roman ruins including a theatre, a necropolis and baths, and is also home to the Vincent Van Gogh Foundation. You could also easily take a day trip to Avignon, 40 minutes away, to visit the Popes’ Palace, the Place de l’Horloge and the bridge that found itself immortalised in a famed song. There’s also a fab market to poke about in (perhaps to find something tasty for your tea?) and a tourist train to transport you around should you be weary of foot.
